I would absolutely choose Quebec City first, and considering its proximity I would also do Montreal if you have time. Having lived very close to Toronto for the majority of my life, I honestly don’t really understand the appeal.

MiniMeow :  if you’re looking for something more relaxing and walkable, definitely Quebec City. I really don’t see the appeal of Montreal (to be fair I lived close to there in undergrad), and we only go to Toronto to visit friends (and see the occasional blue jays game). In the Toronto area you can go visit niagara and see the vineyards (but October may be a shoulder season). There is much more to see in Canada than those cities imho.

Quebec City, hands down. It’s so beautiful and historical. We took a 10 day trip a few years ago and spent 5 in Montreal, 3 in QC, and 2 out in the mountains. I desperately wish we would have spent more time in Quebec City. It’s gorgeous and there is so much to see. That said, if I could do it over I’d still want to hit the top sights in Montreal.

I lived in Montreal for a while and loved visiting QC. I don’t think you need 10 days there though. Toronto is just like any other large city so if your friends would meet you in Montreal I would do that. Are you driving or flying? Any other stops you would want to make if driving? We love visiting the Burlington area too.

My husband and I visited Quebec City during New Years a few years back and loved it! It’s such a beautiful area. The size is perfect to explore over 2-3 days without feeling rushed.

It’s better to visit all 3 locations, each of them deserves proper attention. In general, Canada is a very beautiful country, I have been there once but can’t wait to come back again. Also, I recommend looking for local tours and activities

MiniMeow :  just an FYI it’s called Quebec City. Quebec is a province and Quebec city is a city within that province.

Toronto sucks IMO, but if you want to visit your friends then make a stop for a few days. You could do 2-3 days in Toronto and a few days split between montreal and qc. They are pretty close together (2.5 hr or so).

If you don’t want to do montreal and qc, you could do montreal and ottawa, which is slightly closer (2hr).

I’ve been to all three. I’ve spent a lot time in Quebec, as my father is from there. I would say Quebec for sure. It’s the most beautiful place. In fact, that’s where our honeymoon will be next year. As for the other two, I prefered Toronto. Mind you, I went to Montreal in university for a concert, and had very limited money and was only there a day and a half, so we couldn’t do much. Toronto was more fun, but I was graduated with a job, and had the money and time to explore and do more things. I think either one of those two are great choices, but Quebec, IMO, is a must. All three are very walkable, I find anyway.

I’m also interested in the Montreal area, we are going up there for a few days this month (mid sept). Any absolute must sees?

Would you consider going to Western Canada instead? If you have a 10 day span you could really spend some quality time in Alberta (Banff, Jasper, etc.) or BC (Vancouver, Victoria, Tofino… even Kelowna). It’s just unbelieveably beautiful.

Or further out East? Halifax is great. Cape Breton…

Just throwing out some other more appealing options (I live near Toronto).

There’s just way better places than Toronto, Montreal, or Quebec City in my opinion.
