It’s usually a thank you for contributing to the wedding.  I think a lot of people continue to do it as a ‘thank you for supporting us’ even if it’s not financially.

I think we did it for both reasons. We got my parents a gorgeous oil painting to go in their new living room and they loved it. It cost us a pretty penny, but they were paying for our whole wedding so we wanted to do something really nice. We got his parents a weekend getaway.
