Last Friday, around 10:00AM, I got a traffic ticket. I didn’t stop at a stop sign. I know that I made a mistake and just wasn’t as aware as I needed to be, since I didn’t see the sign at all, but I also think it was a pretty easy mistake. There’s a bunch of construction going on around that area, and so there are a ton of detour signs and other things around the stop sign. I missed it in the jumble of signs. I’m annoyed because rather than fixing a dangerous situation, the city decided to create a traffic trap there instead and profit off people’s dangerous errors. No less than four other cars were pulled over for making the same mistake I did during the ten minutes it took for them to write my ticket.
I am pissed now, though, because I took a half day off work today so I could go to the courthouse, pay my dues, be a responsible citizen, etc., but when I got there, they informed me that the cop hasn’t turned in the ticket yet, and thus they can’t help me yet. WTF? It’s been FOUR DAYS. Even the guy at the courthouse said it should be there by now. And then I lost out on four hours of my precious vacation time for nothing.
Well, I just went online to check, and sure enough, my ticket is showing up there just fine. Either the cop finally turned in my ticket sometime within the past two and a half hours, or the guy at the courthouse was inept. Either way, I’m out four hours of vacation time, and I STILL have a ticket over my head.
The one and only other ticket I’ve ever gotten ended up with there being a warrant out for my arrest even though I did everything right (the judge, in fact, photocopied all my documentation so she could start an internal investigation to get someone fired for being made of such fail, and then she threw out the entire case), so I’m REALLY dreading dealing with this one. Ugh.
Who else thinks traffic tickets are dumb?
EDIT: I have no problem with getting a ticket. I made a mistake and broke the law. I am upset that the cops are staking out a dangerous spot rather than fixing the problem, and I am upset that when I tried to pay four days later like a responsible citizen should, I couldn’t because the cops hadn’t put in the paperwork a few days before like they should have.
