I need your help, bees. My wedding photography package includes either a bridal portrait session or a trash the dress session.
If I do a bridal portrait session, it will be like a fashion shot with me and my dress. I will be fresh and ready for pictures. Most people use bridal portraits for announcements in the newspaper. However, that is more of a Southern tradition (I am getting married in Virginia) and is almost nonexistent in the North (I actually live in Pennsylvania). While I am sure the pictures will be beautiful, I am just not sure they will be necessary when I am sure there will be more than enough pictures of me on the actual wedding day.
If I do a trash the dress session, my dress will be less trashed and more…dusty. Horseback riding is my hobby, so I was thinking about incuding horses somehow into the session. Maybe doing some bareback pictures, lounging around on haybales, etc etc. While I absolutely love the idea of including horses and a little bit of country, I also feel like trash the dress sessions are a little behind the times. I am already married, why do I need yet more pictures of me in the dress?
So as you can see, I am rather torn. Let me know what you think!!

I voted for a bridal session just because I’m of the school where I’m keeping my dress in pristine condition after the wedding. Instead of either of those, I opted for a wedding session after the wedding. I figured that the cocktail hour wouldn’t really give us enough time to get all the pictures we want, so we’re doing a session with just Fiance and I in our wedding garb (well, he’ll probably in a suit rather than renting a tux again), and getting the pictures that we want in as much time as we need.

@rosie.jonesy.9: I voted for the “Trash the Dress,” because seriously, what are you going to do with your wedding dress after your wedding? And…you can get it cleaned afterwards!
Besides, you’re going to have A TON of pictures of just you in the dress on your wedding day, why would you need even more??
My Fiance and I are going to do a “Trash the dress” session afterwards, and it’s going to be fishing themed! We’re going to go to a river/lake and go fishing together in our wedding clothes! It’s fun, it’s something we love to do together, and it will be pictures we can show our kiddos when we take them fishing in the future!
I’ve seen several trash the dress sessions, and they turned out awesome! One last thing, there’s a difference between trash the dress and ruin the dress. You don’t have to do anything crazy; my friend and her husband simply rode horses in their wedding clothes. You don’t have to go crazy and paint your dress crazy colors or even get it wet.

I voted TTD, but only because I wonder how many pictures you realistically need of you looking beautiful? On the day-of, they’ll take shots of you everywhere from every angle anyway. Do you really need an additional period of time with just you looking glamorous?
I’m 50/50 on Trash the Dress photos. On one hand, I LOVE the pictures that come from them. When you stop caring about the dress’ upkeep, the photos are awesome! On the other hand, I see it as the epitome of wasteful. You’re paying for the most expensive article of clothing you probably will EVER wear and then destroying it. On the other OTHER hand…what else are you going to do with it? It’ll either rot in your closet in pristine condition or you’ll try to sell it. Might as well do something fun with it instead, the money is already spent.

I think the TTD session will give you more interesting shots. Bridal sessions are lovely and are useful if you need to do announcements or if your family wants more classic shots of you. But you can get some really fun shots with a TTD session. The way my photographer described it is that brides usually don’t actually try to trash the dress, but they’re using the session to take shots they wouldn’t have attempted at the wedding for fear of getting the dress dirty. I really like the idea of horseback riding in the dress too.

Your trash the dress session sounds more like you (I know I don’t know you, but your wording shows your passion for your hobby).
@LTD418: I also like to idea of doing a shoot after the wedding to get the photos you couldn’t get the day of. We’re thinking of doing this with a friend at the local aquarium and around the city.

We did a “Day After” shoot. My dress did get a bit dirty, but it definitely wasn’t trashed. We did the shoot because we didn’t want to waste a lot of time doing couples photos on our wedding day. We were more interested in spending time with our guests than getting our picture taken, so it made sense for us to postpone many of the photos for another day.
