So talk to me about travel agents…
Darling Husband and I are planning on going on a cruise in a few months, and Mother-In-Law recommended we call this lady who is a travel agent because apparently Mother-In-Law thought she was very helpful for MIL’s cruise last year. So I did, and I talked to her once for 5 minutes, and once for about 10 minutes. I really didn’t find her all that helpful; she sort-of answered a couple questions I had, but also she mostly told me things that I already knew from my own research. For example, I told her I was looking at cruises leaving from a particular city on a particular date for a particular length of time, and when she called me back later, she apparently hadn’t even found one of the cruises I had found, since she didn’t mention it (but she did mention another ship from the same company, so it’s not like she doesn’t work with that company.)
So my question is… Is it bad if I don’t call her back, and just do the booking on my own? (If you ask: why wouldn’t I have her do the booking? I don’t have a great reason I guess, but mainly just b/c I like to see/choose my exact room, etc, rather than trusting someone else with the details.)
thanks in advance!

I guess what I’m asking is- Is it rude/bad to talk to a travel agent on the phone a bit, but then do the booking yourself? Or do they expect that some people will do that, and they don’t care?

@red_rose: I guess it’s both – it is kind of rude, but they do expect it. My friend is a travel agent, and from what you’ve described, I don’t think YOU are being rude, because you only talked for 15 minutes and she didn’t do much work.
Rude is when they spend days finding you deals and making up a dream itinerary and THEN you go and book it alone. But you’re not being rude at all IMO.

I don’t think it’s rude. You have no attachments to her, she didn’t a ton of work for you yet. I personally have used travel agents every time I have traveled out of the country, and have found them extremely helpful! Twice we had to cancel & rebook last minute, I would of been lost if I were doing it on my own. I just always feel better having a professional take care of something so important and expensive! Maybe she wasn’t the “right” agent for you, try calling around.. maybe you’ll click with someone else. And honestly, she’ll never know you booked it on your own.. she’ll have no idea what you decide to do, even if you go without someone else.
