Some old acquaintances of mine got married recently and went to the Canary Islands for their honeymoon. It’s near to Africa, so might not be in your travel budget, but I thought it was a neat idea!

I recommend Tuscany especially as you loved Puglia because it has a different feel. You can stay in an agriturismo or farmhouse and venture out to small hill-towns and wineries. They also had fig trees where you can pull them off.

Other ideas are Greece or renting a villa in southern Spain and doing day trips to the beach, local towns with maybe a day or two in Granada (see the Alhambra) and Seville. They are cities but not too busy.

The Greek islands for fresh figs.  I visited Rhodes many years ago and went to a fig farm there and got to pick them from the tree and eat them.  Best figs I have ever eaten.  Best to go in summer time though if you want to eat figs.

Positano is an amazing destination and would be great for a honeymoon.  Its a great place to stay put and relax and also has the options of day trips to other locations on the amalfi coast if you want to explore more.

How long would you want to go for? We love Italy and we are doing three weeks between Venice, Florence and Rome. I urge you to spend time wherever you decide (as OH likes to get to know a place) and not just do a whistle-stop tour. Italy deserves the investment – I don’t get how people say they have “seen Rome” in just a few days. We did 10 days the first time and it was enough to fall in love with it but not nearly enough to unearth everything.

So on that basis I’m seconding Tuscany. You could rent a car, drive to different villages, but spend time soaking it up.

ETA: I loved Rhodes too.

What about Venice, then somewhere down the east coast of Italy, or maybe Greece?  We loved Venice (although not a honeymoon) and actually did “get lost” there.  I haven’t been to either of my second two recommendations, but really want to do both.

I think that some places in Italy or Spain (or even France) with a rental car sounds perfect. You can stay in one location (or maybe switch after one week if you prefer) but do quite a few day trips as well as just have some lazy days to do nothing and hang around the property

Darling Husband and I are more into hitting a lot of little spots so we love renting cars and then just making a big circle around an area – for example we did that in Spain two years going around the Barcelona area. A few days in actual Barcelona, then a few in the cava vineyards to the south, then a night or two at the beaches on the coast, then north to the french boarder and the mountains etc. While we didn’t get an extremely long time in Barcelona we had both been before so we just mainly concentrated on seeing some different things vs the big tourist attractions and going out for some great food. In the smaller towns we found that 2 days really was enough to see a few things, eat a few meals, and watch the sunset (or rise – depending on the location)

I think southern Europe would be amazing then.  Crowds would be less, and the weather wouldn’t be hot, but warmer than Canada.  You could rent places on VRBO or Homeaway and stay in the thick of it and live like the locals.
