So, I used to live by myself – for like three years – and loved it. I never worried about someone breaking into my apartment, never worried about being out late at night – I was completely comfortable.
My Fiance and I moved in together about two years ago. I guess I have gotten used to the comfort of him being there to “protect” me, because the more he travels for work, the more worked up I get about being home alone over night. It came to a head last winter when he was traveling for a week stint and our chocolate lab started barking one evening for no apparent reason (he doesn’t normally do this.) It scared the bejesus out of me and anymore when he has to travel, I literally can not sleep. Every little noise I hear, I pretty much jump out of my skin. Every time he has to leave, it proves to be a long week.
Fiance has to leave for a work trip again this week and this afternoon we talked to our neighbors and they told us their house was broken into last week… You can guess this isn’t sitting well with me right now! We are lucky because my parents live about five minutes away, so I could go stay with them if I wanted, but I feel like such a baby! Additionally, we have two dogs and I can’t bring them with me to my parent’s house for various reasons and I hate leaving them home alone overnight.
So my question for the bees with a FI/Hubby that travels – do you get freaked out? How to you get past it?

My husband does sales and travels out of town about 8 nights per month. I’ll be honest, I do get freaked out sometimes, especially because I love watching crime shows when he’s gone. I always have the door locked at night, and when I go to bed I turn on our alarm system which definitely helps with peace of mind. I’m definitely paranoid when I have to walk the dogs late at night, but I always make sure to full survey the area first when I walk out the door. Our neighborhood is very safe, but you never know… The worst thing I’ve heard of in the last few years is a couple of break-ins to cars that weren’t locked.
The other night when he was gone our neighbor’s alarm went off around 1 am. I completely freaked out, and turned on our alarm at once since it hadn’t been set yet. I’ve also had a few times when the dogs start randomly barking at the door, which is similar to your story. I guess my advice is, if you’re really that scared when he’s gone, maybe it would be good to invest in an alarm system for your home? I definitely have peace of mind when ours is turned on. It’s great for being alone in your house, but also coming home because you know there’s no chance of there being an intruder inside. Ours is around $30 a month and installation was free.

@faye0314: An alarm system has definitely been brought up! I think I am going to look into it some more. I often wonder if it would really give me that much piece of mind, but everyone I talk to says that it does! Thanks for responding, I don’t feel as crazy anymore. 🙂
