I flew a bunch when pregnant, but made my last trip at 30 weeks. And it was only to see family where I knew there would be doctors I trusted if something happened. I wouldn’t leave the country that late in the game, personally.

dianaj17 :  Congrats on the work opportunity bee!  I’m in a similar situation where a work opportunity has pushed us from summer 2020 into 2021.  Also a little sad, but it’s exciting to have a great career!

I would absolutely travel long haul while pregnant and I can imagine I will.  I’m sure there is a small chance I could change my mind when it comes around to it but I doubt it.

We plan to start a family gap year when our baby is somewhere between 4-10 months old so I don’t see an issue with doing it while pregnant.  As long as you have good travel insurance it is usually fine, there are pregnant women and babies living in those countries.

dianaj17 :  depending on where you are going, there may be malaria pills safe for pregnancy and breastfeeding. I was living in a malaria zone when I got pregnant (I was assigned overseas and we had to TTC then due our crazy work assignment schedules). I think I was on mefloquine. Some people don’t tolerate it well but I had no issues.

Also, traveled a ton internationally during this (my second) pregnancy. I was/am carrying pretty small and still had a really uncomfortable flight  28w from Asia to the States via economy. I’d totally do business at 32/34 weeks but absolutely not economy. It was pretty uncomfortable!!

dianaj17 :  Of course check with your doctor but I work for the goverent assigned overseas and we are medically cleared to take certain malaria meds in line with CDC/FDA standards during pregnancy and nursing. I hope your travel doesn’t interfere with your TTC plans.

Asia might be a good option- no soft cheese and not a wine culture 🙂 the smells are strong so you won’t know hwo you’d handle that if you are sensitive (especially in the first trimester) haha. We did Japan when I was 18w and I definitely partook in sushi- in Japan women are encouraged to eat sushi while pregnant and the risk of foodbourne illness is incredibly low. But its whatever your comfort level is 🙂 I will say I was quite tired still at that point and a bit nauseous so not able to enjoy the trip as much as if I wasn’t pregnant. We also did several countries in Southeast Asia because we were living there, and those were all fine.

Compression socks when I flew back to the States at 28w were really nice. I kind of want to wear them even when I’m not pregnant!
