My fiance and I are are planning our honeymoon right now, and have decided on our dream location – Italy! I’m sorry for another post about this, but after reading others, I have compiled some information and would like some more guidance!
We are thinking to spend 7 nights in Italy, and even though we initially had a lot of great places picked (Cinque Terre, Venice, Florence, Volterra, Siena, Naples, Sorrento, Amalfi Coast) there is no way to see it all. We have decided to do Florence, Siena, and Rome, and through in Volterra if we have time. Does this sound like a good compromise? We are hoping to spend around 5K.
Based on the advice from other bees, we put a bid on Zicasso, and gotten Rick Steve’s books (which are amazing!). So would it be smarter to use Rick Steve’s information, put a flight alert out to hopefully snag a cheap flight, and plan it ourselves? Or should we work through something like Zicasso (you list the details of your trip and your budget, and travel agents who are experts in those areas send you a request for proposal) b/c they may be able to get better deals and streamline the process? We want to spend a few days in hotels, and a few days in quaint B&B’s (I’m assuming we will do the hotels in Florence/Rome, and B&B’s further out – Siena area).
Any advice you could give would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you! 🙂

@cj8: we went to Italy through a travel angency and it was fabulous! It definitely makes it easier IMO.

I use TripAdvisor extensively for every trip I plan. http://www.tripadvisor.com/Tourism-g187768-Italy-Vacations.html
When you’re in Florence, make sure that you see Michelangelo’s David. I usually find famous art to be over hyped and disappointing, but David lived up to its reputation!

We are doing our honeymoon in Italy, we did all the bookings ourselves. The TA’s I spoke to told me they didn’t really work with B&B’s. We also found that the places they suggested did not have the greatest reviews on TripAdvisor. We also saved about $500 by booking on our own

We did Italy for 15 days for our ‘moon….and our budget came in right around 5k. I used trip advisor for absolutely everything, and also rented an apartment suggested by a friend for part of our stay. I found the same thing with travel agents…they recommend hotels, not necessarily B&B’s, although I haven’t worked with a ton of travel agents.

That is awesome that you were able to do 15 days for 5K. Where did you go?
Thanks for that tip! I’m a little worried that our trip will be too “touristy” (but hey, we are tourists, right? ha). How long would you suggest to stay in Florence?
Thanks for posting ladies!
Any advice on cheap flights? (we will be departing from Chicago). And did anybody else use Rick Steve’s in their planning? I’m wondering if his ‘off the beaten’ path restaurants end up being not so off the beaten path with his readers.
