Are there any other brides out there who are struggling with the whole weight issue when it comes to dress shopping? I would like to lose weight, but I’m not sure if I will, and if I DO, I’m not sure how much I will lose! Do I buy a dress that fits now? And just have it taken in if I lose weight? I thought about getting a dress a couple sizes smaller, but I’m not sure if I want to put that kind of pressure on myself. How much can a dress be taken in?

I would get a dress at the size you are now. Alterations can do wondrous things… even if you have to go down a couple sizes. I have many friends that ordered a dress several sizes smaller and they never lost the weight. Needless to say, they were stuck looking for a dress at the last moment. My college friend had to settle with a different style than her top choice because the original dress took 5 months to come in.

How much are you trying to lose? The good thing is you have over a year. I’d start losing weight now and wait to go dress shopping til about 8 months out.
I only started my weight loss 7 months out (could NOT get motivated before then) and the whole dress thing has been a major stressor these past few weeks. Even today, I was wishing that I was the size I’m at now trying on dresses (I would have picked a totally different dress in my current size, I’m sure).
My best advise to you is just start with something TODAY and work hard and stick to it. In 6 months, you should see a significant change and you can go dress shopping then and still have plenty of time for your Dec 2011 wedding.
YOU CAN DO IT!

Like you, I’m trying to lose weight. I’m putting off buying a dress until the last possible minute- since I’m just ordering one from Nordstrom I can wait a pretty long time. I think the best thing to do is to continue losing weight until you buy a dress. Your wedding date is a long way off, so you’ve got plenty of time! Don’t put too much pressure on yourself by buying a dress that’s some sizes smaller. Also, I’ve heard that a dress can only be taken in a max of 2 sizes, otherwise it will lose it’s shape.

I just noticed your wedding date… @aracle makes a great point. I would order a dress in like 5-6 months. Good luck sweetie!!!

Don’t stress! Take a deep breath. Your Fiance loves you the way you are, just a reminder. If you are trying to lose weight for health purposes, I totally understand. I also totally understand trying to lose weight for vanity, but there is no need to pressure yourself during an already stressful time by buying a dress too small. I bought my dress in a size that fits me perfectly and I am hoping to lose a little by the wedding, if you do the same then if you lose weight it will be tailored perfectly to your body. I think that’s the best way to go.

Thanks so much ladies! It looks like everyone is on the same page here, so I think I will wait to buy a dress for several months. In the meantime, I’ll continue to have fun looking and trying on!
@oracle: Thanks for the advice and words of encouragement! I am ideally trying to lose about 30-40 lbs, although I’m sure I would be happy with 20. I think that if I buy a dress now, I will end up in your same situation, wishing I had picked a completely different dress once I am at the size I want to be. It’s hard to wait though, because dress shopping is just so much fun! 🙂
@sweetpea1031: Thank you!!! You are right, Fiance completely loves me the way I am, and if I didn’t lose a single pound for our wedding, he would still love the way I looked that day. Sometimes I have to remind myself of that! It’s easy, as a bride-to-be, to feel pressured to lose weight.
