But I’m failing at it miserably.
I’ve just helped a friend pick out an engagement ring for his gf and my SO has heard most of the advice I’ve given him. One of the tips I gave him was to purchase a ring and a diamond separately have have the stone put in a setting by a jeweler.
Fast-forward to Thanksgiving, meeting SO’s extended family for the first time and afterwards talking about Christmas together (just the two of us). I accidentally slipped what I was planning on getting him for Christmas than said it was only fair that he give me a hint. He said that he was getting me 2 things, one I’ve asked for and one I haven’t and that neither one is together yet. The one I asked for was an easy guess, he is an excellent artist and I’ve been requesting something. The one I haven’t asked for I assumed was also something he was making, but he said that no, it was not something that he was making, it was small, already in his apartment, in two parts and not together yet; but that’s all the info I was getting the rest would be a surprise.
I’m trying really hard to not think that he’s talking about an engagement ring because I don’t want to either ruin the surprise or be very disappointed to get something else….but of course it is all I can think of….

I’ve given up trying to guess when SO will propose. Last Christmas he was Prince Charming in a charity pantomime and he was joking about sweeping me off my feet, someday my prince will come… he joked that he could save some money on a ring because Prince Charming could just propose with a glass slipper!
On the night of the pantomime, both families (mine and his) were sitting in the audience with me and I was so sure he was going to propose in front of everyone with a glass slipper while dressed in his Prince Charming costume – perfect, right? Nope. He bowed at the end and I still went home with no ring (or glass slipper).
So obviously I have no clue what’s going in in his head. There have been loads of hints (or what I thought were hints) and loads of perfect situations to propose (it probably didn’t even occur to him that these situations would have been perfect!). So there’s no point in hoping he’s going to propose because I’m always wrong (but I’ll be disappointed if he has let the Prince Charming opportunity for a memorable proposal slip by and just proposes over dinner instead).

I understand how you feel. Whenever SO says anything that I can connect to a proposal/engagement that is where my mind automatically makes the connection. I guess I have a one track mind.

@sweet5k: How exciting! It definitely sounds promising to me, but I am in the same boat as you, just waiting to see what the holidays bring and try to enjoy them with or without proposal. But I do already have my “what I will wear when we announce we are engaged” outfit 😀
