I have about 2.5 years until my wedding. I would like to lose about 80 pounds before then. I have it in my head that if I go try on dresses, it might motivate me to lose weight. I don’t intend to buy one, just try them on. I’m assuming I won’t like how I look in the dresses because of my weight. This could be a completely whack idea. I have no idea but would appreciate your ideas.

If nothing else, you can find what style of dress you like. I say go for it!

I thought this would help me but it made me feel worse. what you need to do is get a work out buddy and do weekly weigh ins or something along that line to hold your self acountable…

Honestly, trying on dresses probably won’t make you feel bad, I have never felt so skinny as I did when trying on wedding dresses, because they are made to make you look good.
Id just buy a pair of pants a size too small or something and work on getting into them.

i was already trying to lose weight when i went to try on dresses and i don’t think that trying on dresses did anything to make me want to lose weight, neither did getting engaged. it is all about personal motivation and mental attitude.

I don’t think it will make much of a difference. Wedding dresses are built to make you look good and feel fabulous whatever size. And what if you fall in love with one now?
It’s all about motivation from within and truly, truly wanting to change your lifestyle. No amount of too small clothing is going to motivate you to eat right and exercise if you don’t truly want to.

I have never been a proponent of trying on or buying something not your size to try and motivate you to lose weight. I would second the suggestion of finding a workout buddy, either a friend or someone online…someone to keep you accountable and have some healthy competition with. That has always been the best motivation for me.

I told myself I couldn’t go try on dresses UNTIL i lost the weight. That’s what motivated me to get losing — I wanted to go dress shopping!!
And I did it. And man, it felt good to try that first dress on, 30 lbs. lighter.

I also agree that buying something that is a smaller size doesn’t work and normally by the time it actually fits, i don’t like the way it fits or it is out of style.
i second a buddy or a group. Weight watchers has helped me a lot. jilliam micheals 30 day shred, couch to 5k.
I also tried to wait until i lost weight until i lost weight to buy a dress, but it didn’t happen. i bought a dress and have since lost weight. I have lost 15lbs since I bought my dress and I plan to lose more, I have 8 months until i get married.

Thank you all for your comments. You’ve given me a lot to think about. Yes, I thought about the possibility of finding a dress I love and wanting to buy it now. I think you’re right, though, that I need to find motivation outside of the dress to get moving.
