Hello,
I won’t be getting married until Fall of 2015, but my mom offered to let me try on her wedding dress this week. I said yes because she actually had decent style (for the ’80s) and I thought it would be sweet for her to see one of us girls at least try it on.
If the dress fits well and is in good condition, I would like to wear it. I’m sentimental like that. So my question is, if I choose to wear this dress, when should I try it on a second time? I want to make sure it still fits before we get married, so I’m guessing about a year before I should try it again just to be safe?

@LoggerHead91207: Hi, that is so sweet! Are you planning or losing any weight? Or do you gain or lose weight easily? Alterations for me started about 2 months before my wedding. I had two wedding dress. I actually ended up taking my 2nd wedding dress out to alter about 3 weeks before wedding and she fixed it with no proble. Hope this helps.

i’d say keep trying it on every few months especially if you’re fluctating weight or size due to health or working out. seems pretty easy 🙂

@LoggerHead91207: will you be altering the style of the dress slightly? I agree with the pp….just 2-3 month before for fitting…more if you change the style

@ssan129: Aww thanks! Mom suggested that I try it on a few weeks ago. Originally I was going to try it on closer to Christmas, but she doesn’t want my Fiance seeing me in a wedding dress before the wedding (she’s a lot more traditional then I am). I agreed not to show him out of respect for her and the fact that its her dress.

Thanks for the replies ladies! My weight can fluctuate somewhat. I’m usually between 140 and 150, though it really depends on how careful I’m being with what foods I eat.
I don’t think I’ll be altering her dress in anyway; I’d really perfer not to if I can avoid it. I believe its an A-line and that usually looks nice one me (and I feel more comfortable then in something more revealing). I’m going to be trying it on tomorrow night for the first time, so I guess we’ll now tomorrow whether this is plausible or not. I’m 5’6″ and I think mom is closer to 5’3″. She was pretty tiny back in the day, but I have fit into some of her old clothes so I have a bit of hope for this.
And no, I don’t think I want to lose any weight. I like myself the way I am at the moment. I would say that I want to tone up a bit, but I’m lazy and that wouldn’t actually happen.
If the dress fits and I decide to wear it, then trying it every few months would be a good idea. That way I can stay on track and make alterations to my eating habits as needed.

UPDATE:
I tried on the dress tonight. Mom was surprised that it actually zipped all the way. It was a bit tight around the waist and it was a bit short, but otherwise there weren’t issues with how it fit. We’re going to bring it to a seamstress and see if they can let the waist out a bit. If they can then mom says I can alter it however I want (which means the poufy sleeves will be gone).
