We conceived on the 2nd cycle trying, but that ended in miscarriage. Took another 3 cycles until the current pregnancy, which is going strong at 16 weeks & change. Throughout TTC, I drank 1-2 cups of coffee per day which is my normal intake. Also drank LOOOOTS of wine, as I do normally. Dh probably drinks 4-5 cups of coffee per day and he never changed his habits. I think if TTC had dragged on much longer I would have encouraged him to cut back and would have probably cut back to 1 cup max per day myself, but we hadn’t reached that point yet. Now that I’m pregnant, I still religiously have one cup per day – could not do without it!

We both cut down to about 2 cups a day a couple months before TTC. There is some research out there about high caffeine consumption by EITHER partner being correlated with a significantly higher (like 2x as high) early miscarriage rate. It’s preliminary research still, but we are older and didn’t want to risk it. https://www.nih.gov/news-events/news-releases/couples-pre-pregnancy-caffeine-consumption-linked-miscarriage-risk

Our stats: ages 35 and 45, drank 1-2 cups of coffee a day, got pregnant in the first 6 months. (First cycle actually… maybe the coffee thing was overkill lol, but we figured it couldn’t hurt.)

I still drink one cup a day while preggo.

mrscb2bee :  Not me but I’m surrounded by women who were or trying to get pregnant. From what I observed, they continued to drink coffee. If anything, they might have cut back but no one I know stopped. Like what some bees have said here, I know after they got pregnant, most of them limited coffee to 2 cups (two 8oz cups daily and this is per doctor’s advice according to them) or less daily.

ETA: But if you are in doubt, just stop it if you can.  So later on, you don’t have any “what if’s” in the back of your mind.

I mean, if you are talking about small-er cups then I normally drink/drank 2 cups a day.  Maybe 16oz?  I’m not an excessive coffee drinker but definitely don’t watch myself.  Probably right around 200mg of caffeine though.  My husband probably drinks a similar amount, or more if anything.  I conceived very quickly with both of my children (first month off bcp for my first and  my second was an accidental O-5 baby when I O’d a day early).  No miscarriages either, thankfully.  I generally don’t think caffeine is going to have much impact unless you are drinking a LOT.  I would never cut it out unless I was having issues, then it might be worth cutting out or cutting down.  But yeah, if you drink 4-5 cups a day it would probably be worth reducing because you’ll have to reduce anyway when you’re actually pregnant and it’s easier to wean gradually.  I have similar feelings about alcohol.  If you’re getting wasted all the time, you probably should cut it down.  But I don’t see any issues with a couple glasses of wine while TTC unless you have issues.  No need to cut it out unnecessarily.  Wait until you’re actually pregnant, enjoy it until then.

I have so many questions about coffee – maybe I should do a spin off? I got my BFP a couple days before AF (due today) and now I’m so nervous to have a cup of coffee but I really want one!

To answer your q, though – I did not really cut back prior to ttc. I didn’t even think about it, tbh but I also only drink 1 or 2 cups a day. But even then, for as long as I’ve been drinking coffee, every few months I get to a point where I do need to take a break for a few days/weeks or even just cut back to maybe every other day. I think it’s probably just one of those “listen to your body” type things of how the coffee makes you feel overall?

My coffee drinking was pretty up and down—I’d go from no coffee at all for several days to having a venti iced coffee each day for several days. I got pregnant our first month NTNP.

areyouthebride :  The official rule is that you can have up to 200mg of caffeine per day while pregnant, which is equivalent to about one 12-oz cup of American (filter) coffee. We have a Nespresso machine and each Nespresso capsule has 60-80mg of caffeine in it. Before getting pregnant I’d have two Nespressos per day, but have now cut back to one, even though I could have 2-3 according to the guidelines. I’m really small so two Nespressos makes me feel like i’m on crack anyway, so I just didn’t feel like that was the best move while pregnant. Like you said it’s more of a “listen to your body” thing for me. Although, I ended up going without coffee completely for the majority of the first trimester cause I was so nauseous all the time and coulddn’t stomach it! But now that I’ve hit my stride in the 2nd trimester, I’m back to enjoying my one Nespresso each morning…it is heavenly!

areyouthebride :  officially you can still have up to 200mg.  I continued to drink coffee throughout both of my pregnancies. Except for a few months when I was either nauseated or had horrible aversions, with my second I think I quit around 6w and started again in the second trimester.  But I generally limited it to just one cup or one pod.  Some women quit completely.  I also ate cold deli meat regularly fairly though, especially later in pregnancy.  Didn’t seem worth giving it up when listeria can be found in pretty much anything now (salad, hummus, ice cream).

tiffanybruiser :  Thanks for this. It makes me feel better. I did have a few coffees toward the end of last week but overall, I had actually started cutting back recently, unrelated to TTC – it was just one of those times but I think I’ll still hold out as long as I can and not feel guilty when I do give in occasionally #treatyourself lol

When we first started TTC I had my normal 1-2 cups per day, got pregnant first cycle, then dropped to 200 mg/day. I miscarried. Second time TTC I cut out caffeine completely, got pregnant first cycle, and still miscarried. I may be biased but in my opinion unless you’re drinking more than 3 cups per day it won’t make much of a difference. Once you’re pregnant just keep it below 200mg and you’ll be fine! I’ve never once wondered if my caffeine intake/lack of contributed to my miscarriages either.

I’ve been drinking one cup in the morning for about 3-4 years now.  We weren’t TTC when we conceived.  I’m 22 weeks along now and am still drinking my one cup in the morning.  I’ve never heard of modest consuption of caffeine being harmful to fertility.  It’s perfectly fine for pregnant women to consume modest amounts of caffeine so long as you don’t overdo it so, it shouldn’t be different for those who are TTC.

I’ve been TTC for almost 3 years. I’ve switched to decaf because I’m desperate.
