bees, I need hour help! My husband and I have decided to ttc. I was like ok let’s begin! But Darling Husband is like no we need to wait a month or 2. I did some research and I am not ready. I think it’s really sweet that he wants to be ready health wise for this (although I wish we could just start trying!), so I wanted to ask what your SO’s did to prep for pregnancy?? Vitamins, healthy eating, anything else besides the obvious? My husband also thinks we both need to go to the doctor for a preconception visit. Is this really necessary?
Thanks for the help!

We aren’t TTC yet but Darling Husband is definitely trying to lose weight before we start. He’s lost 22ish pounds so far since July! I’m super proud of him.

tm6173 : Darling Husband and I both got on weight watchers to lose some weight. Outside of that nothing really has changed. He already doesn’t drink soda, coffee, alcohol, etc. We’ve been TTC a few months and just the other day he asked me to buy him vitamins to boost male fertility.

Darling Husband wanted to make sure that our health insurance and financials were in order before TTC. He already is pretty healthy and takes vitamins, etc so for him it was to take care of the logical pieces

Dh didnt really do anything… He told me last year when we got married that he wanted to wait a year… however within that year he didnt really do anything specific to prepare, he just wanted ready mentally and emotionally. He already eats quite healthy, so he didnt change that. I suggested vitamins, but he claims he doesnt need them, because he eats healthy. I think for him, being ready is more financially.. he would like to save some more money.

tm6173 : preconception visit isn’t necessary. My Darling Husband just started taking multivitamins and CoQ10. Cut back (but not out) caffeine and alcohol. Just generally keep up with healthy habits.

Darling Husband already doesn’t smoke and doesn’t drink much alcohol or any caffeine, we aren’t pregnant yet but he didn’t do anything really. We had talks about finances and day care like others are mentioning.

tm6173 : I went to a preconception checkup first. Since everything was ok my obgyn didnt seem to think it was necessary for Darling Husband to get checked. He did try to be more health consious of diet and exercise but in all honesty he didn’t change much. If your Darling Husband smokes or has any specific really unhealthy habits, I guess it would be wise to cut back, but mostly, you will want to make the changes to prepare your body for housing a baby 🙂

We made sure our private health cover was upgraded to include obstetrics, and I started taking a folate supplement a month beforehand.
Would have liked to get healthier / lose weight / get more money saved up but we unexpectedly got pregnant immediately which was a huge shock (we’d expected 6-12 months trying as I’m 36!). We’re now scrambling round getting a bigger house / bigger car sorted before the baby arrives.
