- Wedding: October 2013
This post is mainly for bees who might be worried that something will happen during their walk down the aisle that might ruin the experience or put a damper on the day. My dad was worried that he “ruined” my wedding because he tripped on my veil after walking me down the aisle. He didn’t ruin anything – in fact he made the moment even more special!
We had a really formal church wedding. The bridal party wore formal attire, the organ played classical music, the church was very old-world. The wedding party walking down the aisle were joyful, but formal and serious. People were in tears.
Then my dad and I walked in, and, well, we changed everything.
I was so excited by the whole thing that I was doing this laugh/cry thing. I was giggling, but crying, but beaming and also tilting my head and mouthing “HI!” to everyone as I walked down the aisle. And apparently I was also speed-walking and dragging my dad along with me. I was just SO excited. When I got to the end of the aisle and saw my husband I reallllllllly started crying. He and my dad shook hands and I looked at my soon-to-be-hubby and it was a very emotional moment for everyone….
…and then my dad went to sit down, tripped, stepped on my veil and almost fell, pulling my veil and me down with him! My head snapped back as my dad tripped on the veil. ti was a good 15 seconds of him sliding all over my veil and me trying to stay upright and not lose my veil or chunks of my hair.
My dad was embarassed. I didn’t even realize what was going on until my head got jerked back, and even then I just exclaimed “ouch, that’s me!” and then turned around and got back to the business of being married. I actually forgot about it right after it happened until someone reminded me of it at the reception.
My sister, one of the maids of honor, said it was the best thing that could have happened in that moment because it really lightened the mood. Before that the walk was so serious and emotional. It gave us all a good laugh so that people weren’t all crying.
We recently got the video back and watched this scene unfold. It was hilarious! Here we were, all serious and fancy, I’m tearing up just watching it, and then my dad and I come in and REALLY make an entrance. Watching my dad and me almost fall at the end of the aisle had us all roaring in laughter. I’m giggling right now thinking about it. It’s one of my favorite parts of the video – I could keep watching it over and over!
I definitely worried about something happening that would ruin the moment, but I also told myself that anything that goes wrong will just be a funny story later. I was so right. There was no need to worry. Something unplanned happened but it was awesome and hilarious and one of my favorite wedding day stories. And honestly, if I hadn’t watched the video, I might have forgotten it even happened.
Now your turn: what went wrong at your wedding that ended up making it even better?
