Hi Bees! I mentioned this on a board a while ago and I have been asked by a couple people for a tutorial so here it is!
What you need
A Fiance to Inflate Baloons (you could do this yourself i suppose)
Tissue Paper in the color you want your lanterns
cups (or jars or bottles)
bowls or a place to let things dry that you are ok with getting glue on (carpet not reccomended)
dilute the elmers glue in a bowl with some water. maybe 50:50 my ratio changed a lot and they all worked
have your handy fiance inflate a baloon to a size you want for your lanterns
now put him to work shredding tissue paper into whatever size you like the look of (squares, strips etc)
tape the baloon to the opening of the cup or bottle or whatever, or it will fall everywhere and get glue on the cat (not as fun as it sounds)
either put the cup in the bowl or not, but you will get glue/ water everywhere
the tissue paper will kind of dissolve if you handle it too much so you have to be ok with it ripping but basically just paper mache over the baloon. i reccomend a minimum of 2 layers. some of mine were like 6 or 7 layers thick and the light still came through pretty well.
let them dry 100% or they will colapse when you pop the baloon
pop the baloon
make your fiance listen to how much money you are saving by making these, then try to justify spending extra on shoes (optional step)
now you can make a handle with some wire (you can punch them with a paper punch to make holes for the handle)
so hang it with a fake tealight in it from a tree, or put them over an led (less hot!) strand of christmas lights with some tape or glue or wire and voila!
