We are doing a “formal” or i suppose “black tie” wedding, but the groom and groomsman will be wearing suits as well. I like the look and i think that they will be more comfortable. I suppose it is all based on the look and feel you are going for and your own personal preferences! If you like suits i say go for it!

I would call that cocktail attire.  I think long Bridesmaid or Best Man dresses are fine, they’re allowed to be more formal than everyone else.

Black tie specifically refers to men wearing tuxes, however you could have your groomsmen in tuxes but tell your guests formal, meaning they should wear dark suits. You could also have a formal wedding without anyone wearing tuxes at all. For women, formal would refer to longoddesses or appropriate cocktail dresses, meaning nothing too short or tight. I’m having a formal, black tie wedding (guests are allowed black tie optional) and the men are all wearing tuxedo. However, I do believe the dark suits are fine as well. For women to adhere to black tie it’s pretty easy (only white tie dictates a formal, floor length gown). Short or long doesn’t matter, just taste! 🙂 I found the following website pretty helpful for all this kind of stuff:

If you are looking to define the dress-code for your guests, you would probably be fine saying “Cocktail Attire Expected” or “Cocktail Attire Preferred”

You could always opt for morning dress (tails).  That’s considered more formal than a tux and looks more like a suit.

@kayberry:  that’s exactly what we are going with. Only our groomsmen will be wearing tuxes.

My wedding won’t be black tie at all, I will definitely not be having short bridesmaid dresses, I love the look of long ones, plus I will be getting married in Winter so extra comfort for the BMs 🙂 And my Fiance and his groomsmen will be wearing suits

@kayberry:  I originally wanted to go with suits for the groomsmen, but Fiance said he really wants to wear a tux. He has so few opinions on the wedding, so I figure I should just give him what he wants.
