I never heard the name Rory until Doctor Who a couple years ago.

And you know what? We want to use that name in the future. And we’ll be proud to. What kid doesn’t want to be named after the Last Centurion?

People should also be able to recognize the difference between “I heard this name on a TV show, and liked it” and “my kid is named after a TV character.”  For example, I’m going to name my first son Francis, after my grandfather, because of how important my grandfather was to me.  That’s not the same as hearing the name on a TV show/in a movie, or reading it in a book, and then using it because you just plain like the name.  Nothing wrong with using a name you like; own it and don’t be ashamed of where you first heard it.

The only one of those names that I would connect to a TV show is Buffy. And that’s a fairly common name on its own anyway.

@Duncan:  I agree. Also the difference between named after and “made popular by”.  Just because its popular doesn’t mean it’s the first place people heard a name, but even if you had a childhood friend named Monica, you’re probably wise to admit you’re aware of the friends sitco. and a certain intern, even if you weren’t particularly inspired to name your kid by them.

Now there’s a bunch of people naming their daughters Arya, after the Game of Thrones character, and acting like “oh!  it’s just a pretty name I heard somewhere!”  Yeah, you heard it from GAME OF THRONES, now stop playing dumb.

Two of my favorite names are from movies, and one of the husband’s is from a video game (and also one I happen to love anyway). I don’t see the big deal. Most names have been used in some TV show or movie or whatever at some point, it’s really, really a non-issue.

I know a 10 year old named Chandler. I thought it was made clear on Friends that it was a weird name. Oh well the parents didn’t take that message I guess.

@AquaGrey8962:  that’s awesome.

I really like the name Emmett and have for a while but I worry that it will be linked with Emmett Cullen from Twilight even though we wouldn’t name our kid after him

@cooperlove:  For me, it was Jasper. I like name, but after Twilight, I’ll never name my son that because of the connection.

However, I have no problem naming my kids after book characters from some of my favorite books that are less trendy.
