Hi Bees! I received a big bonus at work (woohoo!), so I now have enough money to buy a dress. However, my initial plan was to lose a bit more weight 1st (in addition to saving), and buy the dress by late Sept or Oct of this year.
A little background…I used to be a skinny chick, a size 4! But after college, I kind of let myself go and gained alot of weight. These last few years have been a struggle, I’ve tried to lose weight but got very lazy after a short time. Now that I’m getting married, I’ve decided that it’s time to start getting healthy. Back in June, I tried on what seemed like a million dresses, and I narrowed it down to about 4 that I liked. After trying on these dresses, it just confirmed that I really needed to lose weight and start eating better. But now that I have money, I’m thinking I should just go ahead and buy the dress, but another part of me thinks I should wait a while. I wanted to go back and re-try on the dresses I liked to see how I look with a slimmer frame.
So bees, what do you think I should do?
2nd part of the question is…WHICH DRESS? I had my mom, fmil, sister, and Grandmother with me when trying on the dresses and each gave me a different response. I liked them all but not sure which one really “compliments” my figure and really has a “wow” factor to it.
I really liked dress #4 because of the lace, but I don’t like the “pouch” it reveals. The dress was kind of tight so I’m thinking once I lose weight it will definitely look better on me.
Please share your thoughts! Thanks in advance!

I really like 2, but it depends on how much weight you’re going to lose. I would not purchase now, even if you weren’t planning on losing weight. Its too early. You could easily change your mind and it doesn’t seem like you’re in love with any of the dresses.
If you lose weight, your shape might change and you might want to get a completely different dress. So work out and eat right for a couple months. Then go shopping again 10 months before your wedding and see if you still like the same dresses. If you do then you can buy one.
And there’s no reason that bonus can’t still buy your dress in a few months. Put it in the bank and let it earn a little interest.

Coming from someone who knows how to sew. Alterations can always be done no matter no matter how much weight you lose. However, it is MUCH easier and will end up costing you less if you lose some of the weight first as there wont be as many alterations to perform. Also, keep in mind if you are planning on dropping a substanical amount of weight taking a dress down can sometimes alter the appearance slightly.

I think #2 is most flattering on you right now, but I would wait until you lose the weight and see what works best for your body then.

I would put the money away and buy the dress later after losing some more weight. That way, you have less time for dress regret and you’ll have a better idea of what size you’ll be for the wedding. Good luck!

@asscherlover: You’re right, I can’t say that I’m absolutely in love with any of the dresses I’ve tried on (however I was pleased with how I looked in a few of them). I was hoping that after I lost the weight, I would get that feeling of “OMG I found THE ONE!”
@littlepossum: Thank you! 🙂
I think you all are right! I don’t why, but I feel this sense of “urgency” about getting my dress and that I have to get it asap. Since my wedding isn’t until Sept of next year, I have some time but I’ve heard that dresses can take up to 9 months to get back! Is this true? What’s the usual timeline for wedding dress orders and alterations? When should I purchase the dress?

Speaking from experience, I’d wait as long as possible to buy the dress if you’re planning on losing a substantial amount of weight.

If you truly have over a year I would wait and work on yourself to a point where you are happy. I think it’s too soon to order a dress as some of us Brides tend to change our minds. Get something closer to your date and closer to your goal of what you want to look like on your wedding day. Just a note though.. you are still beautiful just the way you are and I would call you skinny today 🙂

What’s the rush? You still have plenty of time to buy a dress. You have two great reasons to wait.
1. You’re not sure
2. You’re planning on losing weight
Don’t set yourself up for dress regret by rushing into this!

I would wait. It’s too hard to know what your measurements will be down the road. If you want to make sure you save the money, open a CD account. Your money will be locked in a bank account for a period of time you decide, and you won’t be able to withdraw until that time is up. And based on how long that time is, you’ll earn very high interest (like around 10% of what you deposit).

Dresses 1 & 2 are the most beautiful and flattering on your figure. Since you have over a year for your wedding, I would wait a while. Good luck deciding!

What’s the rush? Lose some weight and start shopping again in January or so, that will still be 9 months early and you really don’t need to order a dress until like 6 months before your wedding (and even that is being cautious). I would put it on hold and see how you like the dresses later on. I think I like dress #1 the best too 🙂
