My sister and Brother-In-Law have a 2 story house and their yongest is 15 months old. They have a baby gate at the top of the stairs and another between their kitchen and hallway so he can’t even get to the stairs without someone opening the gate. It worked great for their two older ones and so far for him.

We have a video monitor that we use at night time. Though we can hear them quite well without it. They are not able to climb out of their cribs (yet). We also keep their door closed, and have an installed gate at the top and bottom of the stairs.
Our guys do stairs well, but I don’t trust them to be fully independent at this point. They can go up without issue, but down is what worries me.

We live in a multi story home with a 2.5 year old and this has never been an issue. All bed rooms are on the second story and we have a monitor and a gate at the top of the stairs. Our son is also a climber for what it’s worth…he began jumping/climbing out of his crib before he turned two…and it still is not a problem. We do keep his door shut while it’s nap/bed time but I also think just telling your child that they shouldn’t climb the gate works. Our son certainly knows it’s dangerous and that he should always walk stairs with mommy or daddy.
Eta: congrats on the new place!
