Benadryl is one of the safest drugs you can take during pregnancy. My OB had me take it both for allergies and insomnia.

If you aren’t pregnant, I wouldn’t worry too much about what you’re taking until you get your positive test. But basically anything that is going to make you drowsy is a no go during pregnancy.

tiredandillwife :  Don’t take advice from strangers on the Internet about medications and TTC. Speak with your health care provider or pharmacist. They are the experts.

tiredandillwife :  Talk to the pharmasist. It is what they are there for. They all have a private consulting room if you’d rather not announce your TTC plans to the whole shop. The pack will also have a warning if it is not to be taken while pregnant / trying to get pregnant / breastfeeding.

That said. I have never heard about antihistmines being an issue for TTC and I am a HUGE believer in drink til its pink. Until you are pregnant, don’t live your life like you are. Life is too short and pregnancy too long. You don’t share a blood supply with any baby until around 8 weeks so if you are taking them and you become pregnant, it won’t cause an issue.

Also – if your hayfever is that terrible, that is likely to have a bigger negative affect on TTC than taking the medication. I know when my husband has hayfever (and he gets it bad) the last thing he wants to do is DTD.

i know antihistamines can make CM dry and unfriendly, asides that I never had about nothing while TTC, not sure about pregnancy but just about every drug has the dont take when pregnant/nursing to cover their asses. I am not saying there are no bad drugs o.

tiredandillwife :  I will stay on mine (I take fexofenadine tablets daily, every day for the rest of my life) until I am actually pregnant as otherwise I will be miserable.

tiredandillwife :  Do you have Zyrtec (cetirizine) in the UK? Most seem to think it’s fine to use during pregnancy here in the US.

tiredandillwife :  I’ve never heard that. I have bad allergies to my cat and took antihistimines and used a nose spray when I conceived my son who is now 9 months.

I don’t know if this would work for you, but you could potentially take antihistamines during your allergy season and NTNP. Becoming pregnant while on antihistamines isn’t inherently dangerous, just potentially more difficult. Like courtneysokal, I conceived while on antihistamines. Allergies are no fun. I hope you find a satisfactory compromise. Definitely ask your doctor if you are at all worried as to the safety of any medications when combined with TTC.
