I was having lunch today and ran into an aquaintance. She was having lunch with her boyfriend and six year old daughter. After a while she let her daughter go into the play area. They seemed at that point to enter into their own world. They were not paying attention to the girl at all. The girl walked by them twice and they did not seem to realize it. I was kind of upset when I left. I wanted to say something but decided to mind my own business. It just seemed there was a lack of responsibility.

Would you have said something?

Was it an enclosed play area or outdoors? When she walked by, was she leaving their sight? If the girl was in danger, I might have brought her back to her parents (if she was leaving the restaurant), but I wouldn’t normally say anything to the parents. I keep an eagle eye on my kids, but a six year old in a safe, enclosed area might not need as much attention as a younger child. It all depends on the circumstances and the parenting style, I suppose. I’m hesitant to answer, b/c I know I’m over protective and I make sure I sit where I can see my kids the whole time.
