Thats was only slightly worse then my  FBIL’s wedding … the groom (FBIL) had to take the bible from him and write down on a piece of paper what he wanted him to say and had to make it as short as possible in order to cross fingers he said at least what he wrote down.

MrsWFit:  Ours has been officiating weddings just as a side gig for 16 years and has done about 1000 weddings.  We met with him first, he seemed fine, sent us some ceremonies he had done and we customized it from there.  The price was pretty good too.  But being that we hired someone off of craigslist for a really good deal, I wasn’t expecting perfection.  But he was fine.

megsvintagetreasures:  We joke that our officiant will get our names wrong.  So far he has called me Sarah, Deborah, Janet, Jennifer… none of which are actually my name, nor particularly close to my name.  Though, they’ve all been over the phone.  In person he got my name correct.

He’s a lovely man.  And I do think he’ll be fantastic on the big day.

That video is awful.  The bride and groom handled it really well.  Way better than I would have!  I like that at the end she’s just “are papers to sign?”  If she sufferred through it, it had better be official!

AB Bride:  OMG.  While not surprising, that is the worst kick in the teeth.

MrsWFit:

+1 Craigslist is for buying and selling items, not hiring a wedding officiant.

I would only hire an officiant from a venue vendor’s list or business.

I feel so bad for that couple, but I’m guessing they probably went with someone who was pretty cheap. You get what you pay for in these types of situations. We paid what I thought was a hefty fee [$600 + hotel room] but I would have paid more.. my officiant was so organized, prepared, and SO happy the entire time. She did amazing.

Any update on the couple? I wonder if anything new has developed?

My FI’s mother is very involved with her church, she is Lutheran. I am Catholic but since we decided to get married in outside we won’t be having a Catholic ceremony. I asked her pastor to be our offciant and he has provided an interesting experience thus far.

First off the “required donation” for his time is $400! I thought that was a little much for a 30 min ceremony and 2 hours of counceling but I don’t mind paying it because I know how happy his mother is with him.

However, we were emailing back and forth trying to schedule our counceling session , I asked when I should give him the donation and he said… “Over Thanksgiving break would be great. We are putting braces on my daughter and she is about to break the bank”

Now I realize his salary comes from the money brought into the church however, I was completely thrown off and shocked by that statement.  If the FI’s mother didn’t like him so much I would try to find someone else…

I went to a wedding earlier this year that was SO awkward because of the officiant!

He pronounced them husband and wife and then forgot to tell them to kiss, and the groom had to awkwardly remind him about that part. Then after they kissed, the officiant kept talking for at least 10 more minutes! He was making crude jokes about wives and such. Everyone was cringing.
