If you have a B cup or less, an adhesive bra like this would probably be okay.

I also have this problem and went with one that had a low cutting back that is closer to the lower part of my back.  I am with you on not liking the idea of not wearing one.

I think that your grandma was talking about what are called cutlets. I wouldn’t recommend them, but some ladies love them. Victoria Secret sells bras that may work for you and so does http://www.herroom.com/bras.aspx

I had cups sewn into my dress to avoid having to wear a strapless / low-back bra / bustier

During my fitting this week, my seamstress mentioned that if my bustier was higher than my dress, that they could tailor part of it into a “V” shape so that it didn’t show. Maybe this is an option?
