So I just picked up my dress and had my first alterations appointment today (eek!). My seamstress said to go buy like 3-4 options for undergarments to bring with me to try on next time. (Sewing in cups isn’t an option given how sensitive and thin the material is).
The dress has a super deep V in both the front and the back so I think those gel pasties or something will have to work for the top (I’m a small A cup). However, it’s a very thin crepe dress so I’m trying to decide what kind of spanx/other options to get for the bottom.
I don’t really need anything for actual control, more just to smooth everything out. (I’ve already tried seamless thongs and you can kind of see the line under the dress).
Does anyone have brand/type recommendations for either sticky boobs or spanx/underwear?

zmoore01 : My dress was this one – Maggie Sottero Montana, which had a low back, not quite a plunge for the front. I’m an A cup as well. I used stick on nipple covers and had cups sewn into my dress. I used double sided tape to make sure nothing was showing. For my bottoms I used Spanx skinny britches mid-thigh shorts which worked great. They didn’t bunch up and you couldn’t see them under the satin. I had to try a number of different undergarments which all showed so I was happy that the skinny britches worked.
I got the nipple covers off of Amazon:

andygirl : You are an actual lifesaver. I was looking at the Spanx website and they have five million types now so I couldn’t figure out which ones to order. Going to order the skinny britches to bring with me next time to try out!
My friend had a similar dress type and wore seamless control top pantyhose which looked really good–but I hate the way they feel in heels because you’re slipping all over the place.

zmoore01 : I hope they work for you! It was frustrating to buy a bunch that didn’t work before finding them.

You can look into a rita by d’mondaine. Would work well for this dress.

Commando makes seamless mid-thigh shorts, which is what I wore and were perfect. I had no issue with lines at my thighs or around the waist. My tailor recommended these (and only these) as she can cut into them without having any ripping or unraveling. I brought them to my final fitting, where she cut the back to accommodate the deep back of my gown. They stayed perfectly in place the whole 14+ hours I was in them! (I still actually wear them, as they are the most comfortable and breathable shapewear I have found).

I would definitely get a few pairs to try as shapewear lays differently on everyone. As the material on my gown was not hiding anything, i was advised to not use spanx as their seams tend to be a bit thicker. As annoying as it is, grab a couple makes and models and take them to your fitting and see how they work under your gown. Your tailor will give you the best feedback.

mrs2b70 : Yes! That’s exactly what she told me. She said get 3-4 kinds of sticky boobs and 4-5 kinds of spanx/shapewear to bring to my next alterations appointment so we can figure out which is best. I’m trying to get them from places with long return policies so I can hold onto them for a little bit just in case. She said she’s cut them into the right shape previously for brides too.

catskillsinjune : I tried this spanx bodysuit for my dress and I don’t think it will work for OP’s either, it will come up too high in the sides and the plunge won’t really work with it.
I’m struggling as well with undergarments. I’ve accepted I will likely need the stick on cutlets for my chest, but I also want some shapewear but it can’t come up to the bust line due to the plunge! Reading everyone’s advice on this one 🙂

nch000 : Yes, in addition to the front and back being low, the sides are super low too—so I’m thinking most of the bodysuit options won’t work unless I cut them into pieces.
I am pretty flat–so I don’t really need chest support–it’s more just about modesty/smoothing–which is why I think the nipple petals and then some bike short type shapewear are my most likely option.

nch000 : zmoore01 : scooping out a little on the sides is easy enough for a seamstress to do – and since OP doesn’t need shaping, but just smoothing, making a scoop down the sides of the bodysuit won’t effect the integrity of the garment. i’m not sure why you don’t think the plunge will work – the plunge on this bodysuit looks as low as OP’s dress. OP, you might want to consider a bodysuit (as well as the two piece stragtgy you currently have). many “smoothing” shorts will still show a visible line at the top of the shorts when you’re wearing them, and if your dress really is as unforgiving to layers as you’ve said, you might have issues with nipple petals, too. a one piece garment is going to give you the smoothest overall silhouette. just saying, something to purchase and consider trying.

catskillsinjune : Sorry, I wasn’t very clear in my original response. The Spanx body suit, at least on me, wasn’t as low cut as it was on the model. Probably just a body difference, I’m much shorter than models with a bigger chest. The very bottom of the U showed and the top of the cups (where the straps start) came up much higher than on a normal bra and poked out. It was also oddly shaped on the side, which for zmoore’s dress may be an issue, it wasn’t for me. I tried small and the cups were odd on me, I’m a double D (, and I think the cups may run large for her. But I’m glad I tried it and it was returnable! It’s definitely just for smoothing as opposed to shaping (same as what I want). It does feel really high quality and I liked the legs 🙂 It may work for OP!
