My first dress fitting is this coming Monday, and I emailed my alterations lady to ask what I needed to bring in addition to my dress and shoes. She said to bring any undergarments I’m considering. Well, that hadn’t even crossed my mind yet as to what I’d wear underneath the dress! I had assumed once I did the first fitting, that I would know if I needed to get a bra (or if cups would be sewn in) , or a corset, etc. etc….
So now I’m in a bit of a panic! Should I go and buy several strapless bras to bring as an option? Or do most people wear spanx or slimmimg type corset? And does it matter what kind of underwear? My dress is a moderate fit-flare (Amsale Harlow) so it’s not super figure hugging.
I guess any advice any Bees have about what kind of undergarments to buy to bring to the fitting would be appreciated! And probably I’d go somewhere where I can return/exchange if need be!
Thanks so much!

I have a fit and flare dress. It’s not super tight but it’s fitted. I can wear pretty much any undergarmet I want and don’t have to worry about lines showing through. I was considering spanx for tummy control with a strapless bra or maybe cups sewn in, but I ended up going with a corset! It’s super comfy and holds my tummy in 🙂 (I am 5’4 138 pounds 36D size 8. I just wanted to make sure everything was held in and full of support!). My underwear is lace and the cheeky style (not from VS but that style).
I had the best luck going to a small local lingerie store…they helped me go through my options whereas when I went to any department store I was on my own trying to figure out what fit best.

Does your dress already have boning, corset, or built-in cups? If it has none, I recommend a bustier (I got one at Macy’s for $20). It’ll help keep the dress in place. I’m thinking of having my seamstress sew in cups to mine so I don’t look flat-chested. I have an A-line so I’m not doing anything below the waist besides underwear.

Thanks so much for the replies and help! My dress doesn’t have a corset or built-in cups for sure, and it may have some boning. The place I got my dress from did suggest cups sewn in, but I am intrigued by the bustier or corset idea. I had to google them to figure out what the difference was between the two. 🙂 This helps a lot, and much appreciated! My sense is the bustier might be more comfortable, especially as our wedding is outside in July.
