Please remember that legal marriage is not the same as the spiritual bond that you will create with your handfasting. If you are casting, you are purely operating on old tradition and pagan beliefs – these are not the same as the legal wedding that the captain will officiate. Yes, its pretty and it gets your papers signed, but the handfasting is, to me, the more important aspect – if you are comfortable enough in your faith to cast a circle for a wedding and/or handfasting, then be willing to invite the other person into your circle to co-officiate.

Making an assumption, but maybe the handfasting means a heck of a lot more to him than the legally binding “ceremony” the captain will have for you.

We handfast for different reasons than legally binding documents. Perhaps one officiant could explain what a hand-fasting represents, and what it means to you and even why the circle is cast (ideally to keep a “clean” area to begin your time as man and wife), and the other can officate the fastening itself.

I hope you have some pretty rope, and a plan for when you have to pee. I can’t imagine the complication of wearing a dress while being handfasted hehehe. Unless you’re removing the tie between ceremony and reception, then you’ll have better things to think about!
