We did the unity cross.  It was a tad bit expensive, but we loved the symbolism behind the different parts 🙂

I love the handfasting idea a PP suggested. Also, I just attended a wedding where the couple did a wedding lasso (which I had never heard of!) Seems that it may be more common in Hispanic cultures.

Fiance and I plan to do an anniversary wine box at our ceremony. I don’t like the idea of having a random unity ceremony just for the sake of having one, but once I learned of a wine box I knew I wanted to do it. You place a bottle of wine in a box and seal it during the ceremony (maybe nail it shut together, which my brother did at his wedding). You can also place letters to one another in the box. You open the box on your 5th anniversary (or perhaps 1st or 10th or whatever milestone you want), and alternatively it can be opened if and when you have a major argument/turmoil. You drink the wine together and read the letter written by your spouse. You can continue placing a new bottle in the box each time you open it, and seal it up for another 5 years.

Fiance proposed at a vineyard, and we have already selected a really nice wine from that same vineyard to use for this purpose. 🙂
