@HelloRaeven:Try reading a bit before bed, in bed. If you have a TV in the bedroom, you should get rid of it. The lights and sounds don’t let your brain calm down for the night.

Ive heard you are supposed to not go on the computer or watch TV for (I think) at least an hour before bed. Try to drink some Sleepytime Tea or a glass of warm milk. What is keeping you up? Is your mind racing?

She’s right! Get rid of all the light boxes (laptop, too!) about an hour before bed, because they confuse your brain’s sensors.

sex. — particularly if i have an orgasm.

stuffing myself full of carbs or sugar. (not healthy, but it works)

my favourite way of falling asleep is to read until i literally can’t keep my eyes open.

if you can’t sleep, after an hour, get up, do something, and then go back. lying there stressing about how you can’t sleep isn’t helpful!

Random tips I’ve heard:

Don’t keep laying in bed if you can’t fall asleep for an extended period of time (b/c then you associate beds with being awake). Go lay on the couch or something

Maintain a regular sleep and wake schedule, even if you don’t have to wake up for any particular reason, like always go to bed within an hour of x:00pm and always wake up within an hour of x:00am

Random thing I do:

SARDINING! Find a position that is better for sleep. For me, this means sardining. I lay on my stomach with my feet pointing out like a ballerina, turn my head to one side, and wedge my arms slightly under my body with my fingertips pointing towards my feet (like im a sardine shoved in a tiny tin can). For whatever reason this position helps me go to sleep faster.

For you, that might mean the fetal position, or laying on your back with no pillow, etc (or pretending to be a sardine).

Oh, and sometimes (to keep my mind from racing) –and this is going to sound super lame and dorky but w/e.. i just told you guys how i pretend to be a sardine– sometimes I’ll make up like a bedtime story for myself lol. It never has anything to do with real life, just some dumb story and I try to picture it in a relaxing background, and I just fall asleep.

I don’t do this often, but sometimes it helps. Good luck!!

I take 1mg of Melatonin when I have a hard time sleeping. I’ve had insomnia issues for years and didn’t want to take anything (I’m weird when it comes to pills) but I finally decided to try it and it works like a charm. Like PPs said, turn off lights, TVs, laptops and phones well before you try to fall asleep.

I listen to sleep hypnosis youtube videos on my iphone, works well for me. Also its important to be at the right temperature, so make sure you aren’t too hot or cold.

I like these videos, but there are heaps out there to try. http://www.youtube.com/user/jnspire#p/u/54/gjcgjMBelYI

I’ve also taught myself some self hypnosis techniques that get me relaxed enough to fall asleep.

Sex is still my favourite way of falling asleep though, lol.
