Did you tell the prescribing doctor you have a Mirena?

FutureMrsMcGinnis :  you can call and speak to your pharmacist about a possible drug interaction. That’s what I would do!

Disclaimer: You already are aware that you should talk with your doctor. I would recommend speaking with your pharmacist espeically.

However, with that said… I put the mirena IUD and clarithromycin into Lexicomp (which is a drug interaction database that health professionals use). It states that there are no notable interactions.

There is always a chance that an IUD can fail. However, there is a big difference between the risk of pregnancy combing birth control pills and antibotics vs. IUD and antibiotics. With an IUD, the hormones are almost all local, not systemic. So, the risk of an interaction is a LOT lower. The issue is also that I don’t think there is enough studies or information to quantify the risk more than that.

I had the same worries when I combined a different med that can reduce the effectiveness of mirena. However, if you are extremely worried, I would use condoms during the duration of the macrolide.

Doctor bee here – there is no drug interaction between the mirena and clarithromycin. Most antibiotics are fine with hormonal birth control. Have you checked your threads?
