I am not a pro photographer, but if I were in your position, I would offer to pay for his meal, and see what she says, especially if he is planning on helping her out and you aren’t paying travel costs

@ohheavenlyday: I see. Hmm, maybe just be honest and tell her you are offering, but don’t want to offend her and wasn’t sure whether to offer or not???

I would love to see some pros weigh in, cuz I am curious on this. I would hope she wouldn’t offended if you offered, hopefully appreciative, even if she turns you down

I mean, if you have a ton of extra room in the budget, I would (but seriously, no one ever does!) so i guess my answer would be no. . . he’s not a second shooter, just an assistant.

you won’t step on her toes by asking if you should include him in the vendor meal count! She will probably appreciate your thoughfulness.

She told you she is bringing him along, and he will be working for you as well for free. Even if he is just helping her set up lighting (sometimes you need extra hands for this) he is helping improve the quality of the photos you are going to get from her. He may even get some usable pics that you enjoy. He’ll be on his feet all day like she is, I don’t know why you would feed one and not the other. Unless its super short notice and there is no time to add in an extra meal, I would get him the meal. I’m sure she won’t expect it, but they will both appreciate it very much!

Feed all people related to your photographers. Seriously…it’s grueling and he’s providing a free service. Kind of sucks that she is springing this on you, but I think it’ll add a lot of value – worth the little bit that a vendor meal costs, for sure!

i would feed him if it’s feasible for you. my husband came along to the last wedding i shot as an assistant, but i told him that he would probably have to leave at some point to grab his own food since he wasn’t contracted, but the couple had a meal for him. it was unexpected and much appreciated as he worked as hard as i did!

i was in a similar position as my photographer and her husband opted to stay at the resort where i got married (bonus for me, i didnt have to pay her day guest pass!).  So i asked her if he would join us for dinner and she said yes, and i paid for his meal.  it was no skin off my back though since my wedding consisted of 17 people and each meal was $30!  i was happy to do it.
