(Closed) Unusual Middle Name Question…

  • poll: What is your reaction to an unusual middle name?

Don't like it, no matter what the background

Doesn't bother me, even if I don't know the background

Don't like it until I hear the background, then it might grow on me

Middle names are totally unimportant and no one cares about your middle name unless you're an infant

I have an unusual middle name. Even now in my adult years, people laugh when I say it, or bosses dont believe I am telling the truth. I have had to pull out my ID before to prove it to someone. My middle name is after a book character. I hated it and still hate it. But, alas, there are worse things than a funky middle name.

With that said, Harvey is NOT a strange name at all. In fact, I quite like it, and I think the sentiment is wonderful.

Darling Husband has a really weird middle name, which sucks because he’s in the Army so pretty much everything anywhere ever lists him as RANK LASTNAME, FIRSTNAME MIDDLENAME. It’s a really awful name and it follows him everywhere, haha. It’s a family name, though, so nothing much to do about it.

I knew a guy whose middle name was Thor, though. I absolutely didn’t believe him until he showed me legit state-issued identification. It was the greatest thing ever. I mean, the guy’s name was totally normal otherwise, so imagine someone named James Thor Johnson or something. I would TOTALLY do that!!!!

@ExcitedScaredBee:  I guess it totally depends on how ‘out there’ the name is, I have a female friend with an awful middle name that is her Mom’s maiden name I think…its hard to say and doesn’t sound feminine at all….but Harvey? I’d be like, oh, cool.

My middle name is Sue, same as my mom’s.  How boring.

One of my best friend’s middle name is Eugenie.  Now she just laughs about it, but her daughter’s middle name is Jane – nice and plain.

@ExcitedScaredBee:  I have a unique middle name, and I love it. And I love hearing others’ unique middle names. To me, it’s the opportunity either to honor someone or something, or give your kid a name you love but wouldn’t want them to be teased about, and since middle names aren’t as obvious as first names, it’s do-able.

I know two little boys with unusual middle names one is Hemi and the other one is Ice. I much prefer weird names in the middle instead of the first!

My Mother-In-Law told me about a woman that used to live in our area and her kids were named Wonderful Colt and Ocean Jade! :0

    Harvey isn’t that weird ๐Ÿ™‚

If we have a daughter her middle name will be after  my aunt who passed away. It’s an uncommon name but I have always wanted to use it to honor her.

Harvey isn’t weird in my books.  FWIW in Scotland it’s traditional to use the mother’s maiden name as the first born son’s middle name.  I know someone who’s middle name is Rainbow, and another that’s Danger (they both have super “normal” first names too!)

Ditto the PPs that have said that Harvey is not a weird middle name.

Personally, I love mine. It’s my mother’s maiden name so I like having part of my heritage in my name, if that makes sense. The Fiance and I have agreed that if we have kids, my last name will be their middle names.

I feel like having a strange middle name is a bit of a rite of passage. Mine aren’t weird, but I have two so that’s fun – makes my name sound a bit royal (my first & middle names are all very traditional English names).

I think the middle name is a chance to do whatever you like, cause it doesn’t really matter. There’s a moment at school where everyone finds out each other’s middle names and teases each other for about a week (or all the Anns, Maries and Lees form secret clubs) then everyone forgets about it.

My cousin’s kid’s middle name is Danger. yep.

I tend to be more accepting to a strange name if there is meaning/family behind it.
And Harvey is a fantastic name, not weird at all! ๐Ÿ™‚ My grandpa’s name was Harvey and I definitely considered it when thinking of boy names.

Both my first and middle names came from male relatives, they just ‘girlified’ the names, but I said shag that and go by the male form of my first name. lol.  I won’t be naming my kids after family names but I completly understand doing that and harvey isnt strange at all. Better than norma. I hate that middle name. ๐Ÿ™

My son’s middle name is Valentino. After Valentino Rossi, the greatest motorcycle racer of all time. We plan on having fun with middle names ๐Ÿ™‚
