I took the advice that several bees gave and looked in to Rent the Runway. For those that don’t know, it is an awesome site that allows you to rent designer fashions instead of buying them. I will definitely use them in the future but I did not find anything I liked that could be delivered in time for my event. I did want to add that I was initially hesitant to use the site because I was afraid of damaging a rented dress. However, you can purchase insurance on the dress that will cover just about anything you can reasonably do to the dress. So, I will definitely use them in the future!
Anyway, I bit the bullet and went to one of my favorite dress shops to browse. I found two dresses that I love and now need new opinions. Please see the thread I posted above to see my body type and coloring. I will definitely be purchasing one of these.
#1) At $328, it’s pricier than a regular dress but still reasonable. I love this dress. I LOVE THIS DRESS!!!! It’s fun. It’s flowy. It’s cute and elegant. I love the little bit of sparkle and the lace that peeks out under the chiffon. I love this dress. In fact, I love it so much that if I buy another dress now, I will buy this dress later, just because it needs to be in my life. I would wear this dress to the grocery store and feel fabulous all the while. But… I wonder if it’s not “grown up” enough. Everything I own is “cute and fun”. I do wonder if this dress is too cutesy for the type of event I’m going to.
Since I cannot post pics of me in the dress, I figure the next best thing is video of it on someone else! Here it is at a fashion show(you can also see the same dress in blue):
#2) At $598, it’s not quite as reasonable as #1. But it is AMAZING. If I had to make a perfect dress, this would be it. My inner Beyonce wants me to have this dress. Everyone in the store when I tried it on wanted me to have this dress. I kept saying that next to my wedding dress, this is the most amazing dress I had ever tried on. But… I wonder if it’s too much. Too much money… Too much sparkle… Too much attention? Is there such a thing? I feel like a movie star in this dress. And if there were ever an occasion to dress like a movie star, this would be it.
This dress(like most sparkly dresses) cannot even begin to be adequately captured in pictures. It made everyone in the store stop to oooh and ahhhh. Truly is magnificent. Here’s a video that shows off the dress a bit better:
My husband loves the sparkly one best but my best friend far prefers the flowy one. Please break the tie, bees!
I’m really sorry and I hope this doesn’t offend too greatly, but they both look a little trashy. Given the examples you posted on your last thread and the occasion (if it is indeed the Costume Designers’ Guild Award) they don’t seem appropriate.
@jayebaby: I like both, but I think the second one is more appropriate. As much as I like the first one, I can’t help but think it’s something that is reminiscent of something you’d wear in the bedroom! You probably don’t want anyone thinking that.
The second one is sexy but fun and glamourous… what I imagine you’d want to wear on a red carpet!
i just checked out your original post so seeing what you look like and knowing your height, i think the first dress will look awesome on you! also, don’t be afraid to use RTR in the future, i’ve rented dresses numerous times and i’ve never had any issues with damage or anything. their customer service is amazing too.
Of the two I prefer the second, but I think they look a bit too young/prom for the type of event you are describing. I would go for a little bit more elegant.
I would check out Ideelit (there is a sale on Nicole Miller formal dresses right now, and a few other evening gown boutiques open too) or Rue La La. I’ve seen way more elegant dresses than these for a fraction of the price!
@ChemistryBride: That is so sweet and I will definitely check that out to see if I find something for a future event. But my choice will definitively be one of these two. Rue La La is one of my obsessions 😉
