I posted a month ago about a shady ass vendor who wouldn’t give my money back after not showing up for my wedding: http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/no-show-vendor-no-refund-what-would-you-do/#axzz3AHxSiNGG
At that point, AmEx had refused to do anything else and closed my dispute. Most everyone I spoke to advised that I should file with small claims court. I went so far as to send him a demand letter notifying him that I would be taking him to court if my money wasn’t refunded by a specific date, and surprisingly he responded, but of course there was no refund and he stopped replying to me. The thought of going through all that court headache really stressed me out because I knew he wouldn’t show, so even though we’d get judgement in our favor there would still be a matter of collecting payment, etc. and it would just be an extremely long process. I didn’t even have an address or full name to serve him! We are also leaving the country in a few weeks and I didn’t want it hanging over our heads anymore.
A lot of people also expressed shock that American Express was so apathetic about the situation. I decided to take one more stab with them before proceeding with small claims, and wrote a strongly worded letter to the CEO. Who knows if it actually got to him, but at the very least it probably got into more powerful hands than the customer service reps I was speaking to. I also filed a complaint on them through the BBB. This was about two weeks ago.
Yesterday morning, I got a message from American Express saying that they had reached out to him once more, and since he hadn’t responded they were going to credit my account! It was exactly what they said with my dispute the first time, but I’m inclined to believe that my letter and BBB complaint did SOMEthing. This morning, $527.44 was credited back to my account.
I am so relieved, happy and ready to put it all behind me. I broke down crying when I called my husband yesterday to tell him the good news. I just wanted to thank everyone for their advice and support and hope that my experience can help other brides avoid (or fix) the same situation. Above all, don’t give up! I hemmed and hawed for a while about writing that letter, but when I finally sat down to do it, everything came easily and I’m just glad I tried. Thanks again everyone!
