Awww.  I missed your original post, but I had dry socket too and it is AWFUL.  I had a c-section and didn’t take any of the Percoset they gave me afterwards because I didn’t need it, but I used all of it AND all of the Vicodin the dentist gave me when I ahd dry socket.  It doesn’t sound like much, but can be intensely painful.  I’m really sorry you are going through this.

Have you tried drinking some meal replacement shakes or drinks? Those will give you vitamins and minerals, fill you up a little bit, and give something in your stomach for the pills. I didn’t have any problems with my wisdom teeth removal, so I feel really badly for people who do.

Ensure, absolutely. That’s what I bought for my husband when he had his four taken out in October. Just because you aren’t eating, you still need vitamins and to be healthy. You will heal faster.

Glad you went! It sounded like it was a dry socket, so you’ll be feeling better in no time.

You should be OK with a soft diet that doesn’t require much chewing. Ensure will be OK, but not through a straw.

Ouch ouch!! On a side note, I have a really scary story from when I had my Wisdom teeth removed. They couldn’t squeeze me in for surgery until 12:30pm on a Friday, so I went all night and morning without any food or water which was horrible. Then, of course they were running really late so I didn’t even go into the operating room until about 2:00pm, I almost gave up and went home.

So I’m sitting there with the nurse, waiting for the doctor to come in and I hear screaming. A patient in the room next to me is screaming bloody murder, extreme cries of pain. I asked the nurse what was going on and she just shrugged and said “Can’t take the pain I guess” so I asked what the person was having done and she said “Same thing you’re about to have done”. I am not kidding!!!

It ended up going okay though, I guess the other patient wasn’t given enough pain meds, but I was totally out for my surgery. Ugh!

Be careful with the vitamins though. Ensure is good, but don’t start taking a multi if you don’t usually because add that to the vicodin and you could end up feeling really sick. Good luck!

Also, I mentioned it before, but if you do super smooth mashed potatoes – like the powered kind, and top it with some chicken broth and butter you’re getting fat, protien, salt and calories and it’s easy to eat!

I forgot to mention that even if you aren’t hungry, try to eat just a little soft foods at least when you take the pain meds or your stomach will continue to be really upset. You dont want to vomit, because that can be bad for the “holes” in your mouth and potentially cause another dry socket. Good luck!

@moderndaisy: Oh my gosh! That’s horrible!! I would have jumped out of the chair and ran out the door. You are so much braver than me!! I was knocked out for mine, too. Wonder why that person was screaming? That’s awful!

I remembered eating a lot of applesauce when I had mine out.  And if it makes you feel better, I had 3 dry sockets.  Boy they suck.  Good luck!
