I am not completely clear on what you mean? Also, it depends on the circumstances .

My plans to “upgrade” eventually are to change the setting of my current diamond. Is that what you mean? Or do you mean using a family heirloom?

Until you can be more specific, no one can really say. We have no idea what you’re talking about.

Is it your old engagement ring from a previous relationship? Or a family ring? Or just a second hand one?
Actually l don’t know why l’m asking because l don’t believe in ‘upgrading’ engagement or wedding rings. New rings yes, if you like, but the originals are THE ones.

Yeah, I don’t see the problem here personally. In my mind, it’s no different than selling the first ring and using the cash towards a new ring.

I don’t see anything wrong with it but I can understand wanting to keep the original for sentimental reasons.  Personally, I’d probably either trade-in or reset and get a new anniversary ring.

I think if you could use it to buy a new stone then do it, if that’s what you want. As pp said it’s no different than selling it and using the cash etc. it’s completely your call. I sold my first engagement ring and diamond and used the money elsewhere.

I would absolutely sell the first marriage ring to make money for current upgrade.

My Fiance didn’t want me to do this.  So I kept the diamond from my last engagement ring and put it in a necklace for my daughter when she turns 21.

I don’t see anything wrong with it.  I had my wedding band designed and am basically trading in jewelry from previous relationships (plus some other pieces and some pieces my mom is giving me to trade in) to pay for that.   If the value is there for the upgrades, I would totally do it, but if you’re not going to get the value from the stone, i would turn it into another ring or a pendant, etc.
