We need to make the decision by 6PM today. There are two diamond in two stores that looks identical to me. They are also the same caret and same price. However, here is the catch.
One of the diamond is GIA certi H color and SI 1 clarity. The other one is EGL USA certi G color VS1. I know EGL diamond is not as strick as GIA, but how bad it is?
With the same caret and same price. Which one should we purchase???
Thanks sooooo much for your help

get the GIA one.. You can trust that cert

I have an EGL and am very very very happy with my stone, however, if they are the same price, I’d get the GIA since they are probably the same color/clarity anyways (since GIA is stricter). Yay! Good luck!

If they are the same price and look the same to you, get the GIA! They are stricter than EGL and you know that in all liklihood the cert will be an accurate reflection of the diamond’s stats. The EGL “G VS1” would probably be closer to “H SI1” if it had been graded by GIA. 🙂 As long as the stone is eye clean and you are happy with it!

Go with the GIA stone. It’s a widely recognized grading organization, and you’re more likely to have an accurate appraisal from and independent party. EGLs and others have been known to inflate stats, meaning you’re paying more for a stone than it’s likely worth. Not that you can’t get a great EGL stone, but it’s riskier.

@fiona8718: GIA, all the way. That EGL probably looks the same because it is actually the same quality of gem as the GIA one, with inflated stats because they are more lax in their grading. Sometimes the difference in grading is slight, sometimes it is pretty huge – you kind of never know, because their standards aren’t so set, that it can vary widely depending on the person grading. So go for GIA, you always know what you’re getting is what it is. 🙂

More often than not GIA grades are considered the best and most accurate. However, EGL sometimes gets it right – they really do. My stone was originally graded by EGL and I paid for GIA and they were identical. GIA’s Colour/carat/cut/clarity – all dimensions of the stone – everything matched EGL’s.

Either chose the one that you like looking at more, and if you truly can’t tell a difference, go with the GIA. EGL cert is more lenient, so an EGL VS1 may be graded SI1 by GIA. GIA is more stringent, so I’d go with that one.

Thanks so much for all your help! i understand that EGL is not grade as strick as GIA. HOWEVER, I don’t know how much worse? the EGL USA diamond I am looking is one color grade better and two calrity better than GIA one. So even EGL is off by one grade, EGL diamond is still better at this case, right? Or you bees think EGL USA grade more than 2 grades off?
I couldn’t see a difference in color but the EGL clarity is definately better, even though they are both eye-clean.

If you can’t see the difference, I def. say GIA.

If they are the same cost, go with the GIA; I’ve seen EGL reports generously vary +/-by several categories in colour and clarity from where an appraiser would think they would land; you can count on the GIA stone cert to be on the mark accurate and consistant in it’s appraisal value due to this fact over the long term. Your stone is ultimately not just in a ring, it’s in an investment, and you want that appraisal value to be consistant for insurance and replacement purposes in the future (btw-I’m a gemmologist) Hope this helps:)
