Yesterday while my Fiance and I were out doing our Saturday morning ritual of Egg and Bacon Rolls at the local Cafe as a late breakfast / early lunch accomanpied by a perusal of the Saturday Newcastle Herald, I came across an article which instantly reminded me of all those Ladies on Weddingbee in the US that aren’t happy with the US Postal Service. I can remember lots of posts about issues with mail getting lost, range of stamps offered and the lack of customer service in some areas,
But I read this article and eally did laugh out loud.
The Newcastle Herald reported about a letter that was sent from Tighes Hill (Suburb of Newcastle) Australia in 1938 – 72 years ago. This letter was sent registered mail to an address in Port Washington New York. Where it apparently got lost for over 70 years until it was post marked in the states in May 2010 to be returned to sender. I’m assuming it must of sat in some dead letter office somewhere waiting to be uncovered. What got me though was not only did it take 72 years to be returned to sender, apparently the envelope was opened, the letter removed, and the envelope resealed with sticky tape and returned empty. Hows that for customer service?
The guy who now lives at the address where it was returned is trying to find out information about the envelope. BUT the Aussie Post Office that sent it is long long closed (and has been converted into a little sandstone cottage) and with the letter missing as well its unlikley he will ever find out much.
