(Closed) Using a sick day on New years eve…POLL

Put in sick time today and make a note about last minute doc appointment

Put in sick time today with no explanation

Just call in that morning and say I'm not feeling well

Elaborate ruse: fake sick tomorrow afternoon to go home early and call in the next morning

Use a regular vacation day and forfeit my sick days

Kikibear:  If i need a day off last minute, I speak to my boss about it upfront. Even if its for a vet visit for my cat. I’d rather be open about it then lie and use sick time. If i cannot get it off, I go to work and reschedule my plans.

saratiara2:  Well in this case, she’s got a sick day to burn, and we’re talking about the last day of the year.  She won’t be able to use it in the future even if she is really sick.

I’d use a vacation day… Honestly if they’re going to expire anyway, why is it even a question of what to do? If you’re non-essential as you say, it shouldn’t be a problem for the day to be approved.

Rafissch:  At my company if you use sick leave the day before or after a holiday you don’t get paid for the holiday.

IF you want to go with the Dr’s appt route tell your boss you called for an appt and they are working you in on the 31st and see if he will let you have the day off. Side note. I’ve never lied about being sick because of Karma! You will either end up sick or someone will catch you our running errands for the party.

It’s a pretty glaring lie if you just mysteriously get sick, or fake sick in the morning.  Making up a doctor’s note is even worse.

Just bite the bullet and go to work, or take a vacation day.  But don’t lie about it, own it.

mrsfiddlesticks:  To be clear, 99 times out of 100 I do that too.  I mean, my boss is cool as shit – I could probably tell her I needed to go shopping and she’d be like “do it.”  That being said?  There’s always a day or two a year when I wake up and just think “Nope.  Today is not the day I’m going to work.  Not today!” and call in sick.  Like I think it was ONE day this year.  I hardly think that’s the end of the world or that I’m some awful unethical person.

Also, as I said before, I would never do that on a day that I had something important scheduled or if it would cause problems at all for my coworkers.

Kikibear:  I must have mixed up sick vs vacation days! At our office, ours are interchangeable – they’re ‘personal days’.

You have sick days- use them! It would be ridiculous not to.

I would take the vacation day. It’s not worth the risk of getting caught using a sick day as a fun day, IMO.

Who are all you women who have never called in sick when you actually weren’t? I get 10 sick days per year and I usually call out sick 2-3 times a year when I’m not actually sick just to use some of them up.

There are people at my company who have 200 sick days accrued because they never use them. I think it’s crazy. I earn that time and I will use it.

To OP: New year’s eve is the type of day that if you call out sick you will definitely get side eyed and people will not believe you but honestly, there’s nothing they can do about it if you claim you were actually sick. Your bosses will forget about it in a few weeks.

Since you’re throwing a party, do not take a sick day. That’s a very dangerous move.

Kikibear:  I should redo my answer. I actually got fired for using a sick day when i wasn’t. Mind you it was high school (i went to prom) and got busted. I still must be scarred 10+ years ago.

mrsgttobe:  I can keep 300 hours of vacation time on the books (right now I have 275) My sick time never goes away and I have 485 hours as of today and i’m saving that for when I get pregnant. If I tell my boss I just need a “Me” day he says OK and i add it to his calendar. He says I can use sick time for my Mental health day or vacation it doesn’t matter to him.

Rafissch:  why dont you use the vacation day and then use your sick day at a less conspicuous time?

I think it would look bad to use a sick day, IMO.
