@SimpleGifts:  Hi there!  You said that you’re considering using an agent because of the amount you’re spending.  I would consider the location that you’re traveling to a better indication of whether you should use an agent.  Like you, I’ve traveled extensively and I’ve found it better to do my own research and bookings when possible.  I’ve used an agent 2x though – once to sail in the Galapagos Islands and once for an African safari.  In both cases I had to use an agent to book the accommodations that I selected after doing my own research and inboth cases the agent that I used was under the same management as the accommodations themselves.  This worked out great because there were no added fees that an unaffiliated agent might charge and the agent was very familiar with my destination.  You may or may not have that with your local AAA agent.

If you’re feeling like you need added protection because of the amount you’re spending, I wouldrecommend travel insurance (I had insurance on the two trips I mentioned, just in case of a missed flight or medical emergency).  Otherwise, I would just research your trip on the internet and book directly with whichever provider suits you best.

I have AAA and have booked quite a few trips with our travel agent there. I’ve also booked a lot more trips on my own. If I were you, I’d drop in to get some information from your AAA travel agent as far as pricing & what he/she may recommend, you can then go home and research on your own to see what pricing you are able to find and go from there. Sometimes I am able to find cheaper trips on my own and sometimes our AAA travel agent has better pricing or is able to match the pricing I find. So definitely check out both options. Best of luck! 🙂

Oh & we are also doing a DW and we paid for travel & wedding insurance for our trip, just for a peace of mind. So I would definitely look into those options as well.

@SimpleGifts:  Usually I will just shoot my AAA travel agent an e-mail and let her know I was able to find this price on XYZ.com, are you able to match this price? If not, she will let me know and she understands that sometimes other sites just offer much cheaper deals. For our trip to Punta Cana last year I told her the price I was able to find on one website and she was like wow, definitely book it through them because the best price I can get you is over $400 more.

The good thing about booking through our AAA travel agent though is we are typically able to put down a deposit and have the trip paid off within 30-60 days before the trip. So if that’s a benefit for you, the travel agent may be the way to go! Sometimes they are also able to throw in other perks such as free transfers, etc.

We have also booked trips with another couple that we travel with sometimes on other travel websites without any issues. So if the price you found on your own and the travel agents quote are almost the same, I’d go ahead and book with AAA 🙂

Sometimes I find prices better myself looking around then the travel agents first quote but then I will tell the agent and they will often match it and do all the organising of it.

@SimpleGifts:  No problem! Usually we book packages through our AAA travel agent which includes the resort & airfare. Definitely check out June 2013 prices as soon as they open up with your preferred airline. We booked our flights for our DW that is in December in February and ended up paying less then $500 total for two people. Right now, the same flights are $500 for one person. Once the flights open up see what you can find on your own and then see what your travel agent can find to compare.
