Fiance and I live 3-4 hours away from our wedding location, and it’s hard to get down there too often to meet with vendors. Someone I know mentioned that she booked her photographer after only meeting him over Skype (she is also planning from afar). So many girls on here have posted that clicking with the photographer is uber important, so I really want to make sure we get a good idea of the photographer’s personality and make sure we all get along. Has anyone else used Skype to meet with/book vendors? Were your vendors receptive to it, and when you subsequently met them in person, did you find that your impression of them over Skype was an accurate representation of them in real life?

Any way you can have contact long-distance is good! Email a bunch, tell them about your wedding, and see how they respond to it. Are the excited? Did they seem to care about your plans or did they focus on the bottom line? Then, if you like their personality on email, their blog, twitter, facebook, etc, set up a phone call. Chat for a bit about how they shoot the event, what their “philosophy” is, and talk about what you are looking for. I think that will really show if you click or not. They should listen to you and be able to have a real convo. The thing is, you are planning from long distance, so you have to click with someone’s long-distance mode. What good is it if you meet someone in person but they act totally different on the phone or in emails personality-wise? You need to enjoy emailing them too and feel like that is a personal connection because that is what you will have! Hope that helps!
