Wow I just do not get jewelry. I’ve seen the alhambra pieces around and always thought they were pretty! I had no idea they cost as much as they did. No offense, they look lovely and I’ve always thought so, but I had no idea of the brand name and how much it cost. That said, I certainly spend my money on plenty of things people would consider frivolous. I just learn something new every day when it comes to jewelry!

When I was in my late teens/early 20’s a popular item was the ~$700 David Yurman ring. I didn’t even really like it that much, but I was dying for one just because everyone else had them. Now I feel like the Yurman ring is childsplay!

These are great pieces but I think I prefer jewelry that is less brand affiliated (not that I know these brands until someone tells me about them and I google them lol).

@sunburn:  lol…funny you  say that. In 2015, we purchased a car in Italy ( hubby and I both have dual passports from different European countries through our parents) and drove through the Italian Riviera, the French Riviera to Barcelona, Madrid, Cáceres, Salamanca, Lisbon and Oporto. We travelled to lots of places on that trip but we’d never encountered as many Americans anywhere else as we did in Cannes! We literally felt like we were in the USA because practically everyone was speaking English around us with American accents. Cannes isn’t usually a popular destination with Aussies but we figured maybe it was for Americans. We also didn’t see very many of the jetsetting, fancy jewelry wearing crowd in the Riviera but we figured they were all on the fancy yachts in the water! 😂

It’s funny, I don’t love their designs, modern or vintage (I know Jackie Kennedy’s e-ring is VCA and very iconic, but it’s never appealed to me personally), their aesthetic just isn’t my thing. Come to think of it, I’m not attracted to the designs of just about any high end designer these days (not trying to insult anyone who loves them). I’m much more visually-oriented than name-oriented when it comes to fashion/jewelry, so if I don’t like the look, it just doesn’t matter who made it or what their legacy is. I love antique Chanel, Cartier and Dior designs, actually, but wouldn’t be tempted to buy their more recent stuff, even if it was even slightly affordable. Classic Tiffany is easy to love because it’s so clean and simplistic, but those heart necklaces (which were all the rage when I was in high school) don’t appeal to me at all. I don’t know, a lot of these recent high end piece seem to be made from timeless materials, but with very of-the-moment aesthetics in mind (maybe meant to convey a feeling of disposability or “not caring” that in turns implies that the wearer can afford to replace it?). It all works out for me, though, because I could never actually afford this kind of thing in a million years! lol

Not a fan, to be quite honest. Most of the designs look juvenile and cheap to me.

@sunburn:  The first picture is a real VCA, the second is the fake. You have quite the collection!!

the actual designs are beautiful, but for the price, there are so many sparklier things you could get! But then, loads of big designers have outrageous prices for what amounts to costume jewellery, and you’re really paying for the name – if people are prepared to pay it, fair enough. If I could afford it, then I might, haha!

I have quite a few vintage pieces of Van Cleef and Arpel jewelry but like Sunburn, I’m old lol. Why college girls would have this, I don’t know. I have two adult daughters and they can have my expensive jewelry when I die. I’m not buying them anything! I have mother of pearl Alhambra earrings of two styles as well as a necklace and a bracelet (same bracelet Sunburn pictured.) My husband knows that vintage jewelry is a slam dunk gift and we’ve been married for thirty seven years so I have some very nice things.

I actually really like the pieces – they’re a point of difference in a market saturated with halos and solitaires (not that I can talk, I got a halo and love it, lol).

But honestly I cannot justify over $5k AUD for this:

It’s interesting that from literally any other shop this ring would be considered a cluster ring, and receiving it as a gift (or for engagement, given the price), would probably be judged as being low-rent.

I guess context (and price) is everything.

I love VCA and have one piece, the mother of pearl alhambra necklace. Sometiems I wish I had gone with the smaller one just because I like daintier feeling jewelry. I’m a fan of the singular alhambras…dont’ really like the multiple ones since I feel like it’s overwhelming. The prices are definitely a hard pill to swallow hence why I only have one but also feel like I don’t want to invest in more/can’t justfiy the price because it’s not something I consistently reach for.

Oh, I had no idea those Alhambra design necklaces were a designer jewellery! I see those and butterfly rings, I mean the knock-off ones, allllll the time online for 10 dollars-ish. I don’t find them interesting, and woow, definitely would not pay so much money for the originals.

My husband had bought me a birthday present last year and the company had given this necklace for free. I see that it looks very much like the design of VCA. Hmm, I wonder where I tossed it, I might as well put it on. 😀

I admire VCA’s designs but it’s not my style. I prefer modern with an edge. Hence Cartier, Tiffany (I’ve been eyeing a bracelet from their T1 collection), and Chanel. Right now I own a small love bracelet along with a few silver pieces from Tiffany, but looking to expand my designer jewelry in the future!
