@TempyCharty:  they do seem like big shifts – were you still lying in bed, trying not to move around very much? I keep my thermom right next to my head so I only have to reach out and grab it. Also, my temps do tend to go up a little if I double-check (not that much though), because I think the thermometer warms up a little??

It’s best practise to just temp once and then leave it at that, otherwise you’ll go crazy trying to work out which one to use. And it’s really important that it’s at the same time every day, after at least 2-3 hours solid sleep (but if I wake up early I tend to just lie there and ‘pretend’ to sleep until it’s time!!).

See what happens tomorrow, and if it’s not making sense, you may need a new thermometer, or to try vaginal temping as many of the charters do (personally, i’ve never needed to).

Good luck!!

oh, and different pats of your mouth might have different temps – pick one spot, far back under your tongue, and ALWAYS aim for the same spot 🙂

Are you temping orally or vaginally? If you’re temping orally and you are a mouth-breather while you sleep, it could be falsely lowering your temperature in your mouth (your temp will be higher if you have your mouth closed before temping in it). Then after waking if you switch to nose-breathing and close your mouth, the temp in your mouth is rising. Also….even the slightest movements can sometimes affect your temperature, as does the amount of time you’ve been awake. All this could be affecting it. I’d recommend temping vaginally – it’s weird at first, but you get over that within a few days (and you only stick it in about an inch or so). It’s more accurate to your actual BBT and doesn’t fluctuate as much as your oral temp can (breathing with your mouth open, drinking anything through the night like water at the side of the bed, and the placement of the thermometer in your mouth). Also….try not to temp more than once to check the precision of your first reading….it will just stress you out! You should join the Charters thread with the rest of us BBT charters!

That sounds like you were sleeping with your mouth open.  My temps stay about the same, even if I take them back to back — if I am sleeping with my mouth closed, and I don’t move much while temping.  If my mouth is open while sleeping (which I can usually tell based on an off low temperature) they jump up dramatically if I re-temp.  After you temp for a few months, you’ll have a good sense of where there “should be” at any given point in your cycle, so you will have a good sense if the temp you are getting at first is strange.  I’ve also noticed if I think to close my mouth while I’m drifting off to sleep it tends to stay closed all night.
