I’m starting to plan my wedding menu and wondering about accomodating vegans. We’ll have at least 2 in attendance (possibly more that we won’t know about until they RSVP). I discussed a vegan entree with my caterer, and she said it’s no problem. We’ll use that for our vegans and vegetarians. Now I’m wondering about appetizers. my Fiance loves all of the appetizers we chose and doesn’t want to swap any out for vegan options. The two vegans in question (currently) are on his side of the family, so I’m inclined to go with him on this one. We will have a couple vegetarian options.
Do you think we need to add a vegan appetizer? And if so, do you have suggestions as to what might be yummy for both vegans and our other guests?

Personally if I knew I had vegan guests I’d try to accommodate them with appetizers as well as entrees. If you don’t want to swap out any of your appetizers, could you at least add a veggie tray?

I don’t think you need to have a vegan appetizer. You’re providing a meal and I think that’s fine.

cucumber cups w herb white bean dip
carrot/veggies w hummus
bruschetta topped w tomato or roasted ggplant or mushrooms or a mix
I would probably just add a mixed veggie plate (if you don’t have one already) w some dips – its easy enough to add and its pretty typical “display” type app so you don’t have to sacrifice a hot passed app if that is a concern

Can you ask the caterer to prepare a small plate of vegan appetizers for just each of those two guests? We did that for one gluten free guest at our wedding and someone in the bridal party just pointed out to a server who the plate was for.

I think if you are only planning on a few attending you don’t necessarily need an appetizer specifically vegan, as long as you’re having a good option for dinner. I don’t usually expect there to be an appetizer that is veggie friendly but it is always a nice surprise (My cousin used to be a vegetarian and had some soyrizo quesadillas at her wedding that even the meat eater enjoyed)

sambaty4 : Can you make the vegetarian apps vegan?

I personally would if you don’t have anything customizable right now that can be modified to also be vegan. Anyone can eat something that is vegan, but vegans can’t eat everything available. Is it possible to at least add an additional one? As PP mentioned, adding a non-dairy dip to a raw or grilled veggie tray like hummus or baba ghanoush would be an easy task. Bruschetta is generally well liked by vegans and non-vegans alike. A veggie spring or summer roll would be a crowd-pleaser as well.

Right now all the vegetarian options feature cheese. I might be able to get the caterer to make a small plate of vegan appetizers, that’s not a bad idea!

sambaty4 : Watch out for guests with nut allergies with the vegan stuff, many items use a nut base. Otherwise there are many options. Such as hummus with carrots, mushrooms, etc.

sambaty4 : As a vegan, I would be so, so, so appriciative to have vegan apps as well as an entree. Our friends did it for us at their wedding (3 vegans out of 250 people) and we were so greatful.
Our wedding was totally vegan and we had:
falfel and hummus
mexican spiced bean parcels (sort of like a samosa)
tomato & herb arancini (deep fried risotto balls)
spiced aubergine pate on crostini.
If you are serving alcohol I would highly recommend getting your vegans some carbs 🙂

All the suggestions here for recipes are great. As a veggie getting meals with a good plant protein like hommus or beans or whatever is an extra bonus and shows the chef understand a balanced meal.
The other thing I’d say to add to what the bees have already said is if you have a small amount of something especially for veggies or vegans, then make sure the catering people know who they are and it gets to them. I’ve had delightful things made for me at events and they’ve been put out and everyone thinks ‘ooh that looks nice’ and scoffs it all before the veggie or vegans get to it!

As a vegan I never expect to be able to eat appetizers, but it’s a great surprise if I can!

Dont be a dick – feed the vegans. Also might be worth checking if there is a vegan wine available to serve.
