Does your contract have any information on it about going out of business?  You could contact the BBB.

@MsNarwhal:   You don’t have a name to track them down with?  You can probably somehow get that info from the county or state, because they should have some type of record of that business.

Better Business Bureau or also contact the SCC in your state.

uh-oh! If BBB doesn’t work, you can always try the local news channel. They usually have a consumer reporter. I see stories like this pretty often. They’ll try and track them down for free too. And the whole bride/wedding cake angle is a good “story” they can play for for tv dramatics. Good luck!

This happened to a friend of mine three weeks ago, two weeks before her wedding. A cake, around 500 dollars, paid by check… defintely investigate all legal avenues!!!!

You should be able to run a search of your local public records to find out some more info about their business license and any bankruptcy proceedings.

If you paid by credit card, you can file a claim with the credit card company and they investigate to determine if you got what you paid for and sometimes reimburse you.  Otherwise, determine if you’re ready to ready to go down legal avenues and take them to small claim court to receive some sort of settlement.
