FH and I are going to take a trip up there to meet with the girl soon, but she’s been pretty vague with emails. We’re hoping that planned renovations with the crush pad will be complete soon so that we can have a rain plan.

Hey @alicia27:

So I did technically meet with her, I guess. We were coming in from Vancouver specifically to see her, and so I booked a couple of other appointments that day, and then the day before I went to confirm (this was all within the same week) and she says something about it would be best if I came in after February 18!! So I call and we work it out, but she moves our original 2 o’clock appointment back to 3 o’clock. Okay, fine. That messes some other things up, but we rearranged them and really, this was our number one. So we get there, she shows us around. And obviously, it’s beautiful. There are some plans in the works to vacate a building that currently has winery equipment, but I’m really not confident of any details, and we didn’t get a chance to look in that building or at some of the other things we wanted to check out.

So, we had been there for *maybe* ten minutes, and then this girl and her mom show up, and Jackie (the coordinator lady) gave us her card and sent us on our way! And remember, SHE rescheduled our appointment for that time! She was completely vague about restrictions (no music, maybe? something about alcohol? i’m not quite sure), time frame, and cost. She said somewhere between $500 and $2500 depending on what you do. I even emailed her after to ask and she still said “depending on how many people” when I’ve told her at every step of the way that we wanted to do a ceremony and dinner for 60 people.

For us, it was awful, and I couldn’t imagine planning long distance with someone so scatterbrained. But, if you’re in Victoria, maybe it might be worth it? They do have quite a large fridge so if you’re DIY that would be helpful. And I think she said you can drop your stuff off the day before, which is nice. I started looking into the Horticultural Centre of the Pacific, but then we found a venue on this side of the Strait that matches all of our needs.

Sorry for the rantiness of this post. But if you have any more questions, let me know. xo

@alicia27:  No, I didn’t see the gardens, but did get an email: $1500 for reception & ceremony (or $1000 for each individually) for up to 50 people. $10 for each additional after that. Tables and chairs for up to 90 included. We were looking into Merridale, but their alcohol restrictions made us shy away. Where else are you looking at in town? I’m a little disappointed to not be doing it in Vic; I love Victoria in the summer, but the new venue should be great. FYI, we ended up booking at South Bonson Community Centre in Pitt Meadows.

@alicia27:  Our wedding is actually almost a full year after yours! We met with Parkside, and the girl (Liane) there was fabulous. I wasn’t thrilled with the ceremony location options, but I was really into the cocktail reception part. And they seem very accomodating. I don’t think the catering should be too difficult. I think they only have a few vendors that they allow to work in the space. And you can purchase your own alcohol (which was our main criteria). For Merridale, I believe she said it had to be BC-produced. So Wines, Beers, and their Cider. And they also had a Vodka that they make. I also met with the Union Club, but that was kind of a waste of time. Dark and dreary.

We have started looking at photographers and caterers, and we’re going to start looking at marriage comissioners soon. Then once those are squared away, we can relax for a bit. We just started moving into overdrive since the first couple of spaces we looked at fell through on us and we started to panic. I have my eye on a dress, but my mother hates it. And we’re doing iPod dj since our venue has an incredible sound system, and then hoping that some of my friends might be able to hook me up with some lighting.

What about you?

And yes, I was pushing hard for us to elope. So much less stress. I really wanted to get married on the beach in Tofino and then stay at the Wick. They do elopment packages for up to 6 people. Or at Sooke Harbour House would have been nice.

@alicia27:  I really liked the dress until my mom started Trashing it. I got that breath taking feeling, but now im really not sure. So I’m going to try it I again with my Maid/Matron of Honor who will be far more supportive. were paying for a lot of the wedding ourselves, so it probably helps that the dress is only $650 if I buy it in Oregon with no sales tax versus $980 here.

i was all for a west coast elopement with our parents in attendance, but then my Mother-In-Law wanted her brother and sister and niece, and the. That made it into my Irish Catholic aunts and uncles (ie, lots of them), and then if we were having family, we twanged to have our friends. So really, it was my Mother-In-Law that decided it, but they’re also giving us a pretty good chunk of money, so…

parkside didn’t work out because of ceremony location. And we were a little concerned with having a cocktail reception when 90% of our guest list was from out of town. I think it could work, but the husband wasn’t sold.

i think an intimate Hawaiian ceremony sounds beautiful. That’s my idea of a great wedding. We’re trying to cultivate an intimate, backyard BBQ feel to ours, but I’m not sure if that’s going to happen. Oh we’ll, we have a year and a half to work on details to make our ideas come through.
