I’m very grateful for having a 2nd job, but I am SO frustrated with my new job too!!
They scheduled me for a shift but they didn’t post it, so I had no idea I was supposed to even be there. It wasn’t just me, it was all my co-workers too. I think I upset my boss, cause I didn’t go to the shift (had about 4 hours notice) cause I was going out of state for family (they knew this in advance). All my co-workers stayed, & me being gone caused them tons of extra work.
That night they sent me a LOT of emails & called me twice saying I needed to go into the office. Well, I was out of state (they knew this) & couldn’t go in. Plus, every single day I get out of work later than I’m scheduled (over an hour today). I can’t just leave, either. Also, I can’t leave the office for lunch, I have to be there. If someone comes in, I have to stop eating & help them. I do get a paid lunch if I stay, & a non-paid lunch if I leave but sometimes I really need to leave (for my other job/ other meetings).
I’m not allowed to touch my phone at all. So if I’m going to be late (after I’m scheduled), they don’t let me use my phone… not even to text & let my meetings know I can’t be there. Its driving me crazy & its only my 1st week :(. The job itself is awesome & my co-workers are amazing. I need the money, or I’d just quit cause I can’t work when its not on my schedule :(.

Geez it really sounds like they are taking advantage of you. Telling you only 4 hours before your shift and then saying that you let the team down by not being there? They should have the courtesy to tell you in advance when you work and if you don’t show up when you know about it, then you are letting them down, not when you don’t know and told them about being out of town in advance.

If talking to your boss about the insane expectations they have doesn’t work, you should go to a higher up–namely, the HR department. They’d probably be quite interested in the curous practices of this business…I’ve never heard of someone not being able to leave for a lunch, or let people at your other job know you’ll be late. That’s outrageous.

Plus I think it is illegal for you to have to work on your lunch break…

They didn’t say I let them down, I just know I did. It takes at least 3 people to finish a project, & without me, well, it took them much longer to finish. I don’t feel I let my boss down, just my co-workers & they understood I had to leave, they weren’t mad thou. Sometimes they let me leave for lunches, sometimes they don’t… I don’t know til it gets to around lunchtime.
I actually worked for a different business that wouldn’t let me leave for lunches either. They said nothing about this before I got hired, but then they decided that all employees would eat lunch together & talk about random topics. I was so upset because I HAD to leave to take care of things on my breaks. But I quit because they were making me claim “independant contracter” instead of “employee”… I think to cheat on their taxes. I did go to the state office & let them know this & they said they were gonna review them.

So it turns out this is going to be an ongoing thing :(. I worked over 8 hours without a break. I mean, I sort of get breaks like if no one walks up, but I can’t leave. Most people come around lunch time so if I’m really hungry & there’s people, I can’t eat anything. I can’t really have a meal except for snack food. I have to greet people (& can’t do that with my mouth full of food). Only thing I can do is go to the bathroom if we’re not too busy.
