- Wedding: August 2012
My lovely bridesmaids dresses are yet again the source of stress.
(Sorry this is a bit long…)

Way back in March, we ordered the Bridesmaid or Best Man dresses. They were scheduled to arrive in June. In June we were told they were behind schedule by about two weeks. I wasn’t happy about this, after waiting so long, but there was nothing I could do about it. At the end of the additional two weeks, we were told they would be late as much as another 5 weeks. Something was wrong. I reminded the lady at the store where I placed the order that they were already late, and that the wedding was in August, and it was now early July. This next part is a whole story in itself, but let me just shorten it by saying that she was so incredibly helpful over the course of the next week. She was very diligent in following up with the company, making calls and sending emails, making it her own personal mission to get the dresses in with no further delays. She found out that they were sitting in a warehouse in China, and probably had been for some time. Dresses are apparently shipped by “wear date” but dresses from the same company for 2013 weddings that were ordered after ours were already in! So why weren’t our dresses shipped? Some sort of clerical error perhaps? Whatever the issue, she got results. Our two beautiful purple dresses arrived in the store mid-July. This much later arrival date meant that my BMs could no longer go to the big city (5 hours from them) to get alterations done at the shop where the dresses were bought and make a weekend adventure out of it with us. In fact, not only could there be no fun roadtrip, but due to their work schedules, they could no longer even plan a trip on the same day as each other, since it would’ve had to happen with very little notice to their workplaces, in order for the dresses to get done on time.
So, the hunt was on to find a local seamstress who had NO CATS since one of my BMs has a life-threatening allergy to cats. You’d be surprised how many seamstresses have furry companions! They finally found one willing to help with such short notice. The dresses were dropped off, and my BMs were told they’d be done in two weeks, which brings us to now. When my BMs picked up the dresses and tried them on, they discovered that the straps of both dresses were now too short to be used. Both dresses are supposed to be halter style. Also, with one of the dresses, it was made smaller in the wrong places. It was all wrong!
After some calls, another cat-free seamstress was found. After hearing the story, she agreed to try to squeeze them in. She has lots of experience and says she has worked with this sort of dress many times before. She said that she would fix the dresses over the weekend… to be done in time for our wedding the following weekend! Hopefully, there is enough ‘dress’ left to fix the dress that was made too small. The straps are no longer useful… strangely enough, we thought we had ordered extra fabric when the option came up back in March. Apparently we didn’t? The seamstress said the best fix for the strap situation is to make the dresses strapless.
Here’s the kicker: Waaay back in March when the dresses were ordered, Fiance, BMs and I put an exorbitant amount of effort into selecting dresses that were comfortable, flattering, not covered in rhinestones/crystals/other embellishments, in order to coordinate nicely with my dress. The most important element that we were ALL adament about was that the dresses could NOT be strapless. This made the search difficult, but we are all NOT fans of strapless – we feel it really doesn’t look right on us. As I’m sure you’ve seen, Bees, most dresses out there right now ARE strapless. At this point, we can’t ask her to get super creative or take a lot of time; really, this new seamstress is taking pity on us and we will just be grateful if they come back and fit and stay on. If they don’t, then I’m not sure what to do. We’re putting faith in this woman right now and keeping our fingers crossed! I’m sure they’ll look fine, but it’s really frustrating that the one thing that we were all adament on was the no strapless and now after all the trouble we’ve been through with the dresses, they are going to be strapless. I hope they come back fitting properly!
At least they’re still purple?
Sorry for the long post… I really needed to get that out!
