I’m going to go against the grain here and say that requesting a day off from work as a surprise for your spouse, wouldn’t be that awful. I work at a clinic with about 20 employees. If my Fiance privately talked to my boss and said he wanted to plan a surprise get away for the two of us, and she okayed a day off, what would be the big deal/ It’s one thing to lie to an employer and say you are sick or have an emergency, when you really just want to skip out on work. If there weren’t a ton of appointments that day or one of the other NP’s agreed to cover for me, I’d be elated to have a 3 day weekend. I know that wouldn’t work for every job, but it might for some? Just the other day, I stayed late for an appointment so my co-worker could leave early and catch her daughter’s volleyball game. My boss was cool with it, and no one considered it unprofessional.

I wouldn’t appreciate the car thing decorating my workspace, but I would love the gift basket and even the calling of my boss to request a day off assuming that it wasn’t during crunch time and it was a one-time thing.

I used to work with my ex and one time I decorated his cube with balloons and such and when he came in he instantly took it down and I got all butt hurt and he apologized. But really, I should have known that wasn’t his style. He HATES being the center of attention, particularly at work.

On the other hand one of my best friend’s husband did this recently for their anniversary. Her boss said he needed her in a meeting to attend to a client and she was surprised to see her DH there to wisk her away for the rest of the day (to the hotel they stayed in when they got married. She loved it! She posted on FB about it and everyone was remarking on how sweet and amazing that was. And they both are executives at start ups (professional fields).

Bottom line is I don’t think it was inherently a bad idea to do any of these things. She just needed to better understand what her husband would want. For all we know they had a great time! I feel like on some of these threads, everyone loves to beat a dead horse and continually school the OP. :/

OP, you should watch the first episode of Modern Family that aired this week of season 6.  Kinda fitting.

100+ comments on this thread. Even if he’s forgiven her for embarrassing the shit out of him at work, wait til he finds out how many people on the internet know all about it. DH would have my head on a platter…

I forgot to add that my DH said that if I did something like that for him, he would be shocked at first, and then happy and touched. I just think that everyone does not react the same way. I would not be embarassed at all. I would be blown away by such a sweet and considerate thing! No one embarasses me, more than me though . I didn’t see any updates, OP, I hope things are ok….
